stayman is smart

Recommended Posts

It depends what hands you have in your Stayman. Some play that Stayman and then 3minor is to play. If so then this is weak. If not then this is forcing.

We would play double as takeout here. In the former case above double and bid would be strong so there is room for a non-forcing 3 although 4=4=5=0 is the only hand where we would start with Stayman and then have any desire to just compete with 3.

1NT-p-2C-3C

p-p-3D

what is this?

Did 2C promise at least inv. values?

And what would a X of 3C by operner have meant?

And what would X instead of 3D mean, would it be

neg. or penalty?

To answer your question, for me 3D would be forcing,

but since for me 2C already promised inv. values,

opener could have bid a 4 card mayor on the 3 level

.and a double by opener would have been penalty.

With kind regards

Marlowe

It seems to me that opener is at the top of the agreed NT range otherwise, opener's second call would be a balance of power (BOP) double so that partner could judge to pass with an invitational hand or bid on with game values. This assumes of course that 2C promised invitational values. Since opener did not make the BOP double and did not show a major suit, opener wants partner to take appropriate action knowing that their side has game values. It follows then that 3D promises a Diamond suit and denies a Club stopper. Responder may or may not have values for game in Diamonds. Opener can find out by raising to 4D.

I would be more interested in knowing what 3 meant since it is really silly to bid it as natural when you can x to show s

Just as opening 3H is silly when you can open 2H to show hearts.
