1x-1NT-Reverse-2NT

eg: 1-1NT-2-2NT

(Suppose you agreed that 1x-1y-reverse-2NT is Lebensohl. )

How do you play 2NT here? Do you prefer to play it as weak to be able to stop on 3-level or do you prefer to play it as natural to be able to stop in 2NT?

Until recently we have played it as a minimum with a stopper.

Recently we adopted a new method.

Our non-standard method is:

After

1 1Maj

2

and

1 1

2

we play the first step is any minimum and does not show any extra strength. Every other bid is descriptive and game-forcing. Since the first step (2 or 2 does not show extra length we play it as forcing and do make the same bid on a hand with extra length and GF values but not suitable for a jump rebid which would always show a very good suit.

I think this is smart to play natural here:

- 2S "cuebid" in support of diamonds (ok that isn't quite natural)

- 2NT natural and non-forcing but rarely passed. Shows a minimum with cards in the unbid suits and a notrump-oriented hand.

- 3C 6+ clubs non-forcing

- 3D non-forcing

- 3H typically 3 hearts to an honor and a good hand for diamonds

- 3NT maximum with cards in the unbid suits and a notrump-oriented hand

IMO "normal" reverse considerations (where something like Lebensohl is important) do not apply here because:

- 1NT has limited responder's hand

- Slam is very unlikely

- Over 1NT response it is attractive for opener to "shade" a reverse with a hand that would only be worth 2D had the response been 1S (say a 1462 14-count).

Please note this is not my usual tirade against science. I am a big believer in science after a "normal" reverse like 1D-1S-2H, but different considerations apply here.
