This is very rare, but it happens.

Even rarer is winning the first trick with the 4 after RHO showed out. That's happened to me twice!

Lars Eide - a strong norwegian player and the father of the Eide brothers (international junior/schhols players) once made 3NT by leading the 2 from hand at trick two, winning the singleton 4 in dummy. Sure, LHO was asleep. This was the only possible way to get to 9 tricks. (LHO had opened 1 and Lars' holding of a 7-bagger was unknown.)

Bobby Levin once won the opening lead with the 3 of a suit! I believe he bid his 7 card suit up to 3 as LHO stayed silent with his six clubs, then led the 2 for some strange reason.

My person record is winning the first round of trumps with the 4.

... I was a defender.

... I was on lead.

I think I had six trumps with no sequence and decided it was right to try and draw trumps. I led the 4 and declarer contributed the 2 or the 3 from dummy. When he saw my partner show out on the first round he fell off his chair and simultaneously inadvertently played LOW!

I once saw four different suits played in trick 13. I think that's very rare.

I once saw four different suits all of same rank played at T13 (all tens).

Since this thread was here, I decided to get one of these wish tricks for the forum... with forum regulars playing...

This one was on first round of trumps in a five level doubled contract... of course it was all for show as there was no real need to win so cheaply (but how could i passs it up with han and jlall at the table?). Here is the hand..

Here is an excerpt from hunagarian writer Robert Darvas' book "Right through the pack", a classic published in 1947. Every card in the pack has its own story, and this is the strory of 3, called 'A TREY WINS BY WEIGHT'

"South was playing every-day contract of Three - No-Trumps, and I was dealt to the West hand, thus:

My man, West, led the Knave of Clubs, the Queen, King, and Ace going on the first trick. The declarer led the Queen of Hearts, and East's Ace made. East returned the Eight of Clubs; South covered with the Nine; and my man's Ten took the trick. He led the Six of Clubs, dummy's Five dropping and South's Seven made. Later my man regained the lead, and cashed me for the setting trick, my brother, the Deuce, falling beneath my superior weight.

No x's could have represented the Club suit in that deal. Transpose me and my younger brother, and no defence can defeat the contract. I broke that contract in my own right as a master card of my tribe — not as a mere thirteenth. So closely balanced were the opposing strength, that the difference between victory and defeat was measured by the difference between me and the Deuce."

I've had it happen at my table three times in the last few months but before that I cannot remember it ever happening. The coolest one was a few months back where on the same hand we had a wish trick and I got the beer card as declarer too.
