another balancing double

Penalty.

It's a reasonable approach to pass over the x with a decent hand intending to back in later.

Without discussion, I would always assume this is penalty. However, I am having trouble actually constructing a hand that would pass initially and now double for penalty.

Balanced 10 count. Sure you can bid 1N initially, but there isn't a lot of harm in passing 1st.

Unless the opponents can pre-empt the auction.

Maybe most cannot since they play constructive jump bids after a takeout double.

I'm used to it being takeout with both majors but I'm curious as to what the higher-ups play it as.

I would have bid a major (1 with 4=4) with one on the previous round and enough strength to make a takeout double now.

If you're going to bid 1M with 4 cards after 1m (X), what hands do you reserve for the redouble?

I think there is a good case for playing what you play, and it would not be hard for me to believe that it is superior to what I think is 'standard'. But it seems to me that then the XX and 1NT are wasted, and instead it should be something like:

XX: 4+ cards in opener's suit (denies 4 card major)

1NT & 2NT: 3 cards in opener's suit, 4+ cards in the other minor (denies 4 card major)

Raise to 2 of the minor: Garbage raise.

2 of the other minor: 5+ cards in the suit (usually 6), 2- cards in opener's suit, no 4 card major, 1rf.

Or, you know, something like that. It just seems to me that if you bid 1M in the situations you describe then XX and 1NT would be rare indeed.
