Partner Preempts...

Recommended Posts

I pass, will redouble if this gets doubled.

I have often found that going low is good advice when partner preempts in your void.

I agree with this and would pass. I do not agree with Rob F's post as bidding 3H here is surely forcing and not just an attempt to improve the contract.

Very easy pass. You should never run from partner's preempt out of fear.

I didn't think bidding here is out of fear. I thought it was a risk-reward issue.

Going down in 4 when we were going down in 3 anyway isn't going to cost a lot, but making 4 is a game swing. I think bidding 4 even if it's around 25% to make sounds reasonable.

That said, I'm not strongly arguing in favor of 3 or anything. At the table, I actually did pass.

There is a big upside to bidding 3. But possible the downside is just as big. I think this is getting very close to 3.

One useful card and a heart fit and we are getting close to 10 tricks. No fit and we have not many tricks.

This seems like one of those nasty high variance boards.

I think Rob was referring to pass followed by 3 after RHO converted LHO's dbl.

I think that sort of analysis is not right for three reasons. One is that you seem to forget your opponents have double cards when you make that estimate. Two is that you might have gotten to play in 3 hearts if opener made a reopening double of 3 that got passed (or you might have gotten saved altogether - 3 balance by them?) And three is that if you don't catch a heart fit you are getting to some contract that is down a LOT, certainly more than 3.

Supposing you do catch say Qx of hearts. Where are all the diamond losers going?

I think if I had to place the contract right now, I would bid 4.

If I knew partner had Q4, I would be even more confident.

(Yes, I ran a simple simulation. It supported my intuition. But, it was simple.)

On a humorous note...

Years ago, I had a hand very similar to this and partner opened 3, doubled, to me. Figuring that doubling 4 for penalty was more difficult than passing the double for penalty, and wanting to push them into the wrong major, I raised to 4. Sure enough, my LHO thought for some time before bidding my long major (which happened to be spades, making matters worse for them). Success!!! High praise!!! A write-up in the Daily Bulletin for sure!!! Maybe even a speaking tour?

Partner bid 5.

I know of a player who when it went 3 (3) to him w/r raise to 5 with something like xx xx AJT9xxxx x. The opponents both had xxx of clubs and though partner was void, and they got to 6 down 3 when partner had AKQxxx of clubs.
