(1) Agree with 4NT, would probably double instead of Pass over 5.

(2) Pass is not forcing

(3) Double. This is not clear, but I don't expect to make anything at the 6 level - partner's bidding is consistent with a minimum takeout double. Therefore, if we bid 6 it is to save. I am not willing to do this - I expect them to go down fairly often - so double it is for me. Of course, sometimes they make 5 :)

I agree with all this, except I'd saw off 5 a little more happily :).

I also double. Unfortunately partner's double is not forcing so the pass is not a suggestion of bidding more.

(I mean, with this hand it would have been nice if partner suggested bidding more, I don't mean that I wish we'd play forcing passes in this auction white against red)

1) Do you agree with 4NT and Pass? Yes to 4N. No to pass, double 5H instead.

2) Is partners pass forcing? No. How could it be? We forced partner to pick a minor, he has no idea if we are bidding to make or are sacrificing.

3) What do you bid now? Double, but not happy about it.

Would not occur to me to X.

I mean, I wouldn't even X 6...

What tricks do people expect to take?

Me neither.

I can't think of a hand where I would want to make a penalty double with a void - well actually once I made one after a Stayman auction and I had some side tricks.

(1)-DBL-(4)-4NT

(Pass)-5-(5)-Pass

(5)-Pass-(Pass)-???

- - - -

- Do you agree with 4NT and Pass?

- Is partners pass forcing?

- What do you bid now?

1. Agree with 4NT, don't agree with pass. Prefer dbl because I was intending to pass 5 and dbl says "I don't wanna be in slam".

2. If our pass was forcing, yes. Else no.

3. Since I don't seem to have good agreements on this sequence, I'll just bid 6.

Sorry, I don't remember the exact hands:

[hv=d=w&v=e&n=sqxhkqtxdajxcqxxx&w=saxxxxhdqxxxcakxx&e=skjxxxhjxxxxxxdxc&s=shaxxdkxxxxcjxxxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

I felt happy with the initial responses, but then came some experts suggesting that DBL was not good and even a suggestion for 6 :)

I DBL'ed 5 and partner did lead a small . Opps did make 5X +1.

6 would have gone -1 or -2.

We have 12 spades and 14 hearts in this deck.

Under such conditions defending 5X+1 is not such a bad score.

I told you I don't remember the exact hand. :D

...I'm fairly sure that LHO had a 6 card

(Maybe Free also played this hand and knows the exact hand)

LOL, OK I am not proud of my double. :)

Well, perhaps if I had doubled 5 I could pass 5 with a clear conscience, having bid all of my values.  Although doubling 5 comes with some risk too, I suppose, partner might now be tempted to double 5 instead. :D

 6

To me this is a LOTT calculation. They have 11 spades. We have 9 clubs. I am looking at a void. We have a secondary 8 card diamond fit. All this adds up to 22 tricks. Of course, the LOTT doesn't always pan out, and bidding 6 will not always win, but any other bid violates the LOTT, and 6 should be the winning percentage bid.

Sorry but I have never ever made a bid because of the LOTT.

A slam needs much more than a certain number of trumps even when it is bid as a sacrifice.

But he gave some reasons:

1. a Void.

2. a secondary fit.

So together with th LOTT these are reasons to bid 6 Club.

You may say that the reasons for passing are bigger, but his points are valid.

Sure an adjusted count of total tricks is better than a simple count of the number of trumps.
