Is this a serious question or are you posting to get your post numbers up? Pass.

Wow, a bridge insult AND a personal insult. You are really on the ball this morning.

I don't understand why you're surprised

I consider both of the bidding "problems" that you posted trivial...

I'd be shocked to see any serious debate regarding the right bid.

It's sad when personal insults don't come as a surprise...

I guess the main difference is that I didn't consider the original post particularly insulting. My original reaction reading the posts was "Why are you bothering to post this"? The

hand struck me as almost ridiculous...

I don't find it shocking that someone would point this out...

I think it is a good thing to throw some rope to people who take the trouble to post problems.

I voted for pass, and as a problem in a vacuum it may or may not be clear.

In real life I wouldn't worry if partner chose to open 1C or even the universally reviled 3C.

Okay, maybe this needs some clarification.

1) I talked to the Hog. We agree it was not an insult.

2) If you think this is a WTP, that's fine. There is a substantially nonzero number of people who voted 1. I agree that 3 is a bad bid and would personally rank them Pass > 1 > 3, but not with as much difference as you seem to think. As with all preempts, there are many ways where 3 can gain or lose.

3) The other hand I agree should probably not have been posted. I at least posted it in B/I. I was not actually curious about the answer. There is a boring story, and let's say that that debate has been settled. If the worst thing I ever do is create a unanimous poll in the B/I forum about something obvious, I will be fine with that.

Also I observed that nobody has commented that if you play Drury, you will have to bid 1NT after partner's third seat 1M. Not that I think this is a big deal, but the small stuff matters a little.

Assume you are playing with a partner who requests you open and preempt "normally."

System is 2/1.

Pass. You do not have a hand good enough to open 1

(need fewer losers or more Quick Tricks)

nor do you have a hand with high enough offense/defense ratio to open 3

"Normal" with this hand is "pass". So pass.

I suppose pass in 2/1 is mandatory.

We would normally open this hand 1.

I don't think pre-empting is right on a hand with so many negatives - bad shape, poorish suit, no guarantee they are close to game etc etc.

Pretty much I have given up routinely pre-empting at the three-level on 6-3-2-2 hands. I would make an exception with a great suit.

As for Drury I don't play that. If we have passed 1Maj 2minor shows 6-9(10) with a six-card suit for us.

I thought the reasoning behind sound openers in 2/1 was the pressure put on the 2/1 response by a light opening. When the opening under consideration is 1C, that factor shouldn't come into play. I'm not suggesting that this hand should be opener 1C, just curious why 2/1 is a factor.

There is something to be said for maintaining a consistent lower limit. If a pass in 1st seat denies an unbalanced 10-count, it gives partner more freedom to preempt.
