gwnn
All red IMPs we deal and pass with 4A872KJ985J72 and it goes p-1♠-p-2♣p-2♠-p-4♠p-4NT-p-5♦(1 or 4 keycards)? Do you double?

mikeh
This is a more complex issue than first appears (at least, to me). On the one hand, we want a diamond lead in order to try to establish the setting trick in that suit, in the hope that declarer can't dispose of his diamond loser (if he has one) without knocking out the heart Ace. On the other, our stiff trump gives us some hope that partner may have a trump trick.. and our club holding is horrible... maybe declarer is looking at AJ10xxxx x AQx Ax and dummy is Qxx KQx xx KQxxx and we need to take our heart Ace. On a diamond lead, declarer will just cash the trump A and then play on clubs. If we pass, we almost certainly get a heart lead.. if we double we get a diamond lead. I hate my black suit holdings enough that I will pass. But I wouldn't be surprised to learn that my view didn't work out.. it is close. I agree with all this, although its likely they have 9 spades, and no trump losers. Partner is probably broke, although he may have King or Queen of trumps. Club suit is probably running or easily establishable and I expect Blackwood bidder to have heart control... singleton or Kx.All said, i would still double, and hope Q or A is in dummy

No good player, on this auction, holds Qx or worse in a side suit. If we knew that the A was in dummy, we would NOT double
Cascade
No. A heart lead could easily be right. I don't think pass says to partner don't lead a diamond. She should only take my pass into consideration when she has a choice of leads.
oldman5757
Yes, I'd double. I think we are more likely to set the hand on a ♦ lead than on the almost certain ♥ lead we'll get if I don't double. Only if declarer holds specifically AQ is the ♦ lead likely to be "wrong," and even then we still may have chances to beat the hand. :)
skjaeran
Against competent opponents I pass.
