jdonn
2♣, this is where it's so good that these days I don't let the bad suit and shape and spade holding stop me.
han
White House Juniors what does this mean The white house junior tournament is currently on Vugraph. I find it hard to believe that a serious bridge player as yourself has never heard of the White House tournaments. This hand raised some interesting discussion among the commentators. Actually I'm not sure if I qualify as a serious bridge player anymore. I've only travelled to a NABC twice in the past 3.5 years, each time for only one weekend, and have travelled to 0 regionals outside of the DC area in that time. I am planning to go to Vegas though. I also get bored easily when kibitzing so basically never do it =)

gwnn
I would bid 2♣ even if it was gerber. The problems might occur only next round.

the hog
2C and in stark contrast to many of the previous posters, at MPs I think it is close - VERY close. If the opening had been 1D, I would bid 2C without a qualm, but over 1S this has a lot to lose and I would not be surprised to go for a number. A (1M) 2m bid should promise a better suit than this. At Imps this is a clear pass and I don't think it's close.
helene_t
Pass, but apparently the better players bid 2♣ so I suppose I am wrong.
Guest Jlall
2C.. lemme guess: DON'T OVERCALL WITH 3 SMALL IN THEIR SUIT! DON'T OVERCALL WITH A BAD SUIT! DON'T OVERCALL WITH 5332! OH THESE CRAZY JUNIORS, ALWAYS OVERBIDDING. SHOWING THEIR YOUTH WITH THIS OVERCALL, THEY HAVEN'T GONE FOR ENOUGH NUMBERS YET TO KNOW BETTER. cherdano
Justin, they use "NEVER" not "DON'T".

Close, it was more something like: "The Swedish junior at the other table had more sense and passed. Really overcalling is borderline at best" junior commentator: "I actually like the overcall, I guess it is a matter of style" "No, it is a matter of experience. Juniors don't know what fear is. The Swedish junior is an exception, she bids very grown up for her age" etcetera

Really passing is borderline at best" other commentator: "I think passing is the sensible call on this hand, the overcall was quite lucky" junior commentator: "Most Juniors don't know what fear is. They may go for numbers sometimes, but they don't miss games. The Swedish junior is an exception, she bids more like an older person compared to others her age"

655321
2♣ Of course the 3 card spades, and flat shape are negative factors, but having negative factors and not being an ideal overcall is a long way from saying that this hand must pass. Commentators on BBO are a mixed bag - some outstanding players commentate, but some people who are ... less strong ... also commentate. And, like all of us, they are liable to be influenced by seeing all 4 hands.
Cascade
I dislike bidding on balanced hands on this auction. However I might succumb on this hand - 15 is a lot of hcp for a pass. I really don't like the three-small spades.

Han who cares about quality of suit and losers and all that crap on this hand? 15 hcp 5 card ♣ you have to bid 2♣. and if you arent going to overcall i dont know what to say.In fact you should also overcall 2♣ if you have xxx AQ AKQ xxxxx(shocking to some eh?)
