awm
Here's what I did with bridgebrowser on saturday. I have to say, it seemed very slow (maybe in part because I was using a PC emulator on mac, maybe in part because a lot of people were using the database). It was also moderately difficult to get it to do what I want. Anyways: I tested hands where opener has 5♠ and 5♦, with 9-10 points. I wanted to see whether opening these hands was generally a good strategy. My results were that it loses about 0.5 imps per board. These results should not be viewed as saying anything about a "light opening system" -- the vast majority of players on BBO do not have special agreements and are opening these hands in the context of "standard" or "2/1" or "BBO Advanced." In fact by looking at the hands, I observed that these boards were quite high variance (a lot of BIG wins and losses). Most of the wins came from bidding a game that other tables did not bid, possibly doubled, or from declaring the hand in a partscore with the opponents cold for a partial or even a game. Most of the losses came from playing in 3NT on misfit hands, or from partner doubling a cold contract bid by the opponents. The latter things would be less frequent if there were actually an agreement that "opening 1♠ shows 8-12 hcp" or something like this, which is why I don't think this says anything about light opening systems. It makes sense to ask whether it matters what the suit quality was; all of us think that AQxxx x Kxxxx xx is a much better hand than xxxxx AK Jxxxx Q and can easily imagine that opening the latter is terrible bridge. I didn't restrict the hand quality per se, but my qualitative evaluation was that the hands people opened normally did have good suits -- there is some self-selection here and most people didn't think hands like the latter were an opening bid in any case. At some point I did restrict to hands with KJxxx or better spades, which didn't change the results substantially. Certainly one could ask some follow-ups like "what is the best opening on these hands, pass, 1♠, 2♠?" It's even possible that the only people winning imps are the ones playing muiderburg or wilcosz or polish twos (although it would surprise me if there were enough of these people to make a difference). And it seems reasonable that opening with 5♠+5♥ and comparable hands may be more of a winner (greater chance of major suit game). I got frustrated with bridge browser after a couple hours and didn't do these things.
han
It would have been nice to look at all the hands where I (or someone who's game I respect) opened with a light 5-5 hand and see how well I did on those. Unfortunately that wasn't possible. Well, you can do it for the hands that you opened light in about a 2-month period, but how many of those are there? I ran a ton of bridgebrowser searches. At some point Stephen seemed worried, he told me I was using about 20 times as much server time as anybody else, and apparently I was also logged in 6 times at once and crashed the server. I thought that was rather amusing, not that I did it on purpose. Hopefully I helped them to test the system. I didn't find anything particularly interesting. I mostly looked at the hands that I played for each of the databases, and how well I did with various partners or against my regular opponents. It didn't give me any specific ideas of what I should do differently from now on, but it did make me much more motivated to play well and become a much better bridge player. So opponents, beware! muahahahaha
awm
In a way, I think the test I did is better for using "the field" as a whole. If you restrict it to particular individuals, you run into issues like the following: (1) A "good player" likely averages positive imps on all actions based on superior card play and defense. Even if such a good player routinely chooses the wrong action in certain situations they may record a plus score. This makes it much harder to analyze whether a certain action is "working" or not. The "field as a whole" should average 0 imps. (2) Of course, ideally you'd like to compare their plus score for when they open a 5-5 nine count for when they pass the same 5-5 nine-count. But usually people are fairly consistent about this kind of thing. You'd expect that if you deal Han AQxxx x Kxxxx xx in first chair nonvulnerable at imps with Cherdano sitting across from him, he'd do the same thing each time (unless possibly swinging late in a team match or the like). So it's hard to get the same person in the same situation doing different things with the same hand. (3) Some partnerships have methods to handle these sorts of hands. I'm not really trying to evaluate "which system is best" since I think this is a very difficult problem and not one bridge browser is well suited to solving. Instead I'm trying to answer "what style is best in the context of a fairly standard system without a lot of special agreements." So analyzing good players in the context of regular partnerships is exactly the wrong thing to do -- I expect that people opening 1♠ on AQxxx x Kxxxx xx playing Magic Diamond fare pretty well, but also expect that this says exactly nothing about the merits of opening the same hand in 2/1. cherdano
I think Han's suggestion is exactly the right thing to do. (1) Han is playing standard methods. (2) Han would of course compare his result on these particular hands with his average number of IMPs won on arbitrary hands. (3) For Han the relevant question is how well he does opening a light 1♠, not how well the field does opposite a partner who will force to game on a misfitting 12-count. In a way this discussion points out a shortcoming for BridgeBrowser. If it had a built in rating for partnerships, it could always compare the result at the table with the expected average IMP results between these two partnerships. awm
(1) Han is playing standard methods. I don't believe it. I've seen what you guys play. Even playing 14-16 notrumps tends to cater for opening lighter. :) (2) Han would of course compare his result on these particular hands with his average number of IMPs won on arbitrary hands. But this is not relevant. You want to compare to the average number of imps won on the SAME hands with a different opening. Obviously some hands have a lot more "imps available" than others. Good players in established partnerships will tend to do better when there is a hand with a possible slam (for example) simply because there are more imps in the offing. Alternatively, a hand where par is a partscore one way or the other will rarely generate a big swing. (3) For Han the relevant question is how well he does opening a light 1♠, not how well the field does opposite a partner who will force to game on a misfitting 12-count. Sure, ideally, we want to compare how well Han does opening a light 1♠ versus how well Han would do with the same partners and opponents by passing the same hand. But as previously pointed out, I don't think that information is available. It's also a matter of system, even if you're playing "basically standard." Obviously you will do better when you open 5-5 nine counts if partner expects that this is a possible hand and doesn't force to game without either a fit or fifteen high. Of course, as soon as you have that kind of implicit agreement you will lose on hands where partner opens a 5-5 thirteen count and you bid 1NT forcing with 12-13 high, so things quickly devolve into the "it's system" realm where analysis is very difficult. The point I'm trying to make is that a lot of people feel that evaluating shape aggressively and opening on the rule of twenty or losing trick count or zar points is just winning bridge. They will do this even in a first-time partnership without any special agreements or stylistic experience. I'm trying to answer the question of whether that's really true, or whether these kinds of openings only win when the partnership has specifically discussed (or has a lot of compensating partnership experience to handle) this sort of thing. I don't suggest that this has much meaning for experienced regular partnerships who are willing to agree things like "we always open two points light" and adjust their responses to compensate. One could perhaps compare "good players who bid" versus "good players who pass" by restricting lehmans.
mikeh
I confess I have not tried to use BridgeBrowser, so my comments may be based on ignorance. However, my understanding of the 'field' is that it comprises just about everyone playing on BBO.. I don't know if it accesses records from other online games, but virtually all of BBO is bad enough :) Let's consider the study Adam did. He was attempting to test the efficacy of opening a 5-5 spade/diamond 9 or 10 point hand as part of a systemic approach. But the data he looked at included all kinds of random bids.. I am certain, and Adam recognized, that many of the hands included in his sample were hands opened non-systemically... where either partner didn't expect that hand-type, or the opponents didn't, or both. Drawing inferences from that data would be only slightly less dangerous than assessing the merits of opening 1N on 10-12 when everyone else at the table assumed it showed 15-17 :) You'd get a lot of high variance results! But even if it were possible to identify only those hands on which the opening bid was consistent with the partnership agreed methods, the quality of the field makes the drawing of inferences fraught with peril for good players. Admittedly, defensive errors will largely offset declarer ineptitude... any expert who has watched 'average' players declare and defend will usually feel as if he or she were watching ping-pong... with errors flying across the table, and often cancelling themselves out, and the participants usually unaware of any of them. But if a good player wants to assess whether a particular method works for him, and wants to use a BB database to do so, he has to be able to filter out the vast majority of players. It may sound arrogant, but most of the serious posters on this forum are almost certainly in the top 10% of the BBO field, and some are a lot higher than that. I don't know if it is possible to search only results of players with a star, as an example... the possession of a star is no assurance of true ability, nor is the lack of one indicative of poor play, but, on the whole, I think it fair to say that a player with a star will be in the top 10-20% of the field, making their cumulative experience more meaningful, whether the tester is an expert or someone en route to becoming an expert. I am not saying we need study only our individual results... but basing our ideas on the average experience of the average BBO player is NOT a smart idea, imo. awm
Let's consider the study Adam did. He was attempting to test the efficacy of opening a 5-5 spade/diamond 9 or 10 point hand as part of a systemic approach. In fact this is exactly not what I am trying to do. I don't believe that bridge browser is a good tool to evaluate system because you can't filter based on what people's agreements are (or whether they have them). The question I am trying to answer is: Suppose you are playing 2/1 or SAYC in a pickup or short-term partnership. You have not discussed a lot of style issues. You pick up a hand that has less than the normal "opening values" but contains compensating shape. In particular I'm interested in 9-10 point hands which are 5-5 in two suits. Old fashioned Goren/Milton Work count says pass. But Rule of 20, ZAR points, LTC say open. Should you open? It seems likely that opening will be good when you have a major suit fit. You may get to a game that you'd never have reached if you pass. You may win the partscore battle by opening. In the presence of a fit, your hand is worth at least as much as a balanced 12-count. It also seems likely that when there is no major suit fit you are likely to lose. Without a fit, your 9-count is not worth as much as a balanced 12-count. Partner may overbid expecting you to have better cards, or may double the opponents game. So my question is, what happens in the long run? I am specifically not trying to answer questions that relate to people with special agreements that involve opening these hands and adjusting follow-up methods to compensate. han
Adam, why would a serious bridge player like you be interested in how well bad bridge players do when opening very light hands in pick-up partnerships?
awm
Adam, why would a serious bridge player like you be interested in how well bad bridge players do when opening very light hands in pick-up partnerships? Obviously I'm more interested in how good bridge players do opening these hands in pickup partnerships. :P But I'm not convinced that this is a situation where some action will work "better" for good players than for bad players (other than subject to the usual adjustments for better play). Like I said, I don't think bridgebrowser is a good tool for evaluating system at all. But there are a lot of style questions like: "Should you open very light in 1st/2nd with extra shape" "How often should you preempt on a five card suit" "How light should you overcall" Obviously you could (and regular partnerships have) discuss these things. And then actions that match what you've discussed will tend to score better and actions that don't match will tend to fare worse, and some agreements might be better than others in some fundamental way. But I think it's reasonable to ask without the presence of compensating agreements what is the most effective style?
inquiry
Hi adam, At the risk of making han angry by talking about bridgebrowser, i will still answer your post. Any bidding search where you add things like shape and hcp will be slow, the reason being that those items are not indexed. There are three general ways to speed this up. One is to purchase from pickett the data to be stored on your local machine.. i have some local data, but mostly I forget to use it... and that data is a couple of years old. The second is to first build an index with the requirements you want. For unexplained reasons (At least to me), building the index is SOOOO much faster. Once it builds the index (usually a minute or two) it really flys. A third way is to suppress the main view while data collects (ok if you have bid analysis tab enabled). To build an index, you use the Brd Shape/HCP tab. Here you do this by "seat" (dealer, 2nd seat, etc). This is much faster search, and finds what you want and only what you want. The way you did the search (which works by the way, it is just painfully slow -- do like 1eyedjack and take a nap or do something else if you use brute force...but it also slows everyone down i think) is choose an opening bid and forced the opener to have 9-10 hcp, and then 5 spades and 5 diamonds. Assuming you started with 1D opening and ended with 1S opening bid, the search looked at all 1D opening hands, when it found one, it then looked to see if it had 9-10 points, if not it went on to the next hand, if it did, it then looked to see if it had 5D, if not it went to next hand, if it did, it then looked to see if it had five spades. This all takes a long time, and queries the database about 100000's of times. A better way is to click on the brd shape/hcp tab. Tell it you want dealer to have 9-10 hcp and 5D and 5S. Then press search (see image below). An added benefit is you get averages not only for an opening bid of 1♠ or 1♦, but also for funny bids like 2♦, 2NT, 2♠ and even, gasp, pass. And for first seat, you find only 6,000 or so hands. When I did this search using the current tournament database, it took me just less than 6 minutes to find all such hands in the database (for dealer only, for other seats, you would have to move the requirements on those seats and use the bidding tab to force earlier seats like dealer to pass). You can repeat for each position (it is not surprising that third seat openings do better than first seat opening with this hand type). You can even stress the relatively stregnth of the two suits. For example, I did this search, and had the suit qualities as poor as xxxxx. Since you asked about suit quality, there is really no need to search separate searches, you can pull this out using the bid analysis tool. Here are a few images to show what you can get.... This first image shows what the brd shape/hcp tab looks like when set up for this search. Note, when using this tab, always make it the primary search term (that is, press the SEARCH button from this page). http://www.homebaseclub.com/images/0005.jpg This is the image showing the results. Here, we see that openingn either of the normal bids (1D or 1S) did slightly better at imps and worse at MP than pass. Note that for this screen, the click on 1♠ shows the stats for the 1♠ opening bid. http://www.homebaseclub.com/images/0006a.jpg From the bid analysis tool, you can click on the 1♠ bid, and plot the quality of the suit. Note we forced opener to have 5 Spades, so there are no 4 card spade suit, and no six card spade suits. You can click on any of the bars to see how each bid did, for example, opening 1♠ with KQJxx of spades did better than opening 1♠ with xxxxx at imps (the xxxxx is not shown in this image), http://www.homebaseclub.com/images/0007a.jpg A more interesting thing perhaps is to look at the contracts that resulting after a 1♠ opening bid. Here I right clicked on the 2S final contract by the opening side after opening 1♠. You see this bid did fine at imps. As a matter of fact, most partscores and games after the 1♠ opening did well. IT was the slams where opeing 1♠ light really hurt. http://www.homebaseclub.com/images/0008a.jpg Finally, every player has a dynamic rating calculated. Its no big deal, but you can go the the player tab, and force it find opening bids by players with a lehman of 50 or more, 55 or more, 60 or more, etc. In fact, you can force it find players with a rating between 55.36 and 58.03 who held this hand in first seat. You can even force level of ratings for opponents of the opening bid too. So while finding jimmy cayne hands that were opened would be not too likely, you can find people with very good usual results to see how they did. For the record (and this is long), here are the 19 hands played in cayne matches where the dealer (either jec and his parnter, or their opponents) had the type of hands we searched for in this thread, along with the results. Five of the 19 hands were opened. ========================================== C:\BRBR\datasets\cayne.txt Produced by BRidgeBRowser on 10-Mar-08 ========================================== IMP-210 inquiry
For those not willing to wade through the 19 hands. here are five hands where Aldredo Versace held the 5-5 hand with 9-10 hcp in first seat. HE opened once of the five hands.. Four of them contained 9 hcp (first 3 below).. he opened none of them, and two with 10 hcp, he opened one of them alfredo versace (9 hcp)S AQT92 H 5 D QJ643 C 83 Pass (25 zar points)S AT764 H A D J9743 C T2 Pass (27 zar points)S AK865 H 3 D QT965 C 62 Pass (26 zar points) alfredo versace (10 hcp)S AJT82 H 86 D AJ962 C 6 1S (28 zar points)S KJ543 H Q2 D KJ964 C 9 Pass (24 zar points with subtract for Qx)
awm
Ben's data basically indicates that the top italians generally don't open these hands, at least when playing with Jimmy Cayne (in which case they are playing fairly "standard" methods, not necessarily the case when they play with regular partners). But of course, we've all seen good players open hands like this (from Ben's examples, Tor Helness seems to open them). It seems inconclusive about whether opening the hands is a net win or a good strategy. It's interesting that my search came up pretty substantially negative (-0.5 imps/board) whereas Ben's seems to be microscopically positive (+0.06) for opening. sfbp
Hi Adam, One thing to remember is that any incomplete search, if done by index, will return biased (distorted) results - you are excluding all the hands that you never got to. I'm not sure how you did your search but I am guessing by Bidding sequence. Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought you mentioned that you terminated the search. Did you get the warning about stopping an (indexed) bidding or shape search prematurely? i think (depends on what you did):a. the pass is excludedb. you are looking at a different set of hands - Ben probably only looking at dealer opener, whereas you include the hands opened after 1, 2 and 3 passes. We could do dealer pass, second hand opener, but by the time you get to 3rd seat, it's pretty wiry out there.... I mean, noone believes they have to follow any discipline at all. So a bit hard to tie down. Sorry you found it slow - so did we, until we figured out all these weird ways to index things. It's really hard to put such data in a "regular" database because by the time you have put them in a form that can be indexed, and then done the indexing, the data is about 10 times as large, with all the attendant consequences from searching lots of data, not to mention the disk space. 600GB instead of 60. Zelandakh
As a DBA, I would suggest that you should be working out your indices as part of the design stage for a database. Quite aside from basics like table/index design, this would also have told you about the storage issue, along with requirements for some of the more technical issues involved in setting up an efficient database. inquiry
As a DBA, I would suggest that you should be working out your indices as part of the design stage for a database. Quite aside from basics like table/index design, this would also have told you about the storage issue, along with requirements for some of the more technical issues involved in setting up an efficient database. There are a lot of indexes already, for example, indexes for final contracts (including rather doubled or redoubled), indexes for players, indexes for opening bids, index for overcalls, responses, advancers first bid, and other bids through responders first rebid. There are indexes for imps and matchpoints. There are not indexes for, but you can search for any of them --most in combination with other items, and some of them you can build indexes for on the fly:opening lead, either by card or by legnth or major or minor or specific suit or longest suit or shortest suit or trump or third best or fourth best or 3/5 best, or 2/4 best, or specifically 2nd best, 3rd, 4th, 5th best, or top or bottom.shape of a hand, either by position relative to dealer or declearer or compass positionhcp relative to dealer or declearer or shape of a handspecific holding in a suit relative to position of dealer or declarer or compass positionthere are not indexes for both vul, neither vul, declarer vul only, defense vul only, ns vul only, ew vul only, dealer vul only, non dealer vul only, etcnumber of controls is not indexedK&R points are not indexed, etcBut lets consider your index everything from the beginning, lets just take setting up an index for all possible bridge auctions. The number of possible auctions is 12900000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 (1.29 x 10^47). know if each storage space (entry in the index) to hold a potential auction took up a single byte, that would still be larger amount of needed space by orders of magnitude than the largest terra byte drives. To index every possible hand (using anything lower than the J as a "x") to save space is a lot easier, but it still takes up a large amount of data, and really, do you think you want to look for a hand where 2nd seat held specifally Kxxx xxxx void KJxxx and third seat held Axxx xxx Kxxx xx? The solution to these indexes issues, and the trade off of storage space versus speed of search, is to build the needed indexes on the fly. Now why building the index is soo much faster than a power through search not building the index probably has something to do with the authors who wrote the database engine must have a very powerful hashing routine in their index building routines. Seems like the choices made in pre-existing indexes make sense to me... players name is a no-brainer, and contract and first few bids do too, as does matchpoint versus imps. Maybe an index of players shape would have been nice, as there are only 39 "shapes" from 4-3-3-3 to 13-0-0-0, if you do not go by suit, by suits, I guess there is 4 times that many. But really, I could find all the hands that match the criteria given above very quickly (often there are none in MOST of the individual databases). But by judicious use of the search strategies one can usually find what you want quickly. For example, if you wanted to find out how often jlall leads 2/4 best, search on 2/4 leads and "defend" from the lead table as auxially terms to a primary search on jlall...the indexed player name (jlall) will find all his hands where he defended (and give you a total by the way), and show all the hands he lead either 4th best or 2nd best in 3 minutes. If you made jlall secondary to the lead option, the search takes hours. Also if you don't pick "defend" as a search term, but just use 2/4 leads you will find all hands were the opening lead was 2/4 which includes both lead made by jlall, and leads made against his partnership by the other side. Anyway, long winded reply... i think we can all agree fully indexed bridge database (while would be wonderfully fast) is never going to be pratical. The decision each database designer is going to have to decide is how much to index. The decision to have some buildable indexes on the side seems like a good one to me. hotShot
Without knowing bridgebrowser it seems logical to me to first search all boards that have: 9-10 HCP (~19% of all hands) and 5+♠ and 5+♦ hands (Estimation:6511 0,7%6520 0.6%5521 3.17%5530 0.89% => ~6%specific ♠ and ♦ of all 6 possible 2 suit combinations => ~1%) So I only look at a subset that is about 0.19% of the complete databaseand start my investigation on this subset. If I can't do that it takes 99,81 /0.19 = 525 times longer than necessary.
