AlternaG
This hand came up in the semi-finals of a knockout today, board 2/12, first board 3N+1 your way, should be flat. [hv=d=w&v=n&s=skxha9xdkqt9xxckx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] (p)-p-(p)-?? Does anyone open this 1N? I can see some definite advantages to that bid over 1♦, but I am curious to hear your thoughts. rogerclee
I'd open this 1N (and call this a maximum) and have no serious opposition to 1♦.
CSGibson
I'd open it 1NT for several reasons. 1) Our structure for getting to the right game is better over 1NT than 1 diamond, 2) I'm not worried as much about missing a minor suit slam because partner is a passed hand, 3) it makes it more risky for the opponents to compete, and 4) it protects our kings on opening lead. Cascade
I think this is a very good maximum 1NT.
P_Marlowe
1D. I dont open off shape NT, so I am certainlybiased. 1 NT is ok, and if you have agreed to do it,than the hand is certainly a candidate, although I would prefer stronger side suits. The first important aspect is, what systemdo you play over 1NT, some systems allowoffshape NT openings over dont. If you believe the hand to weak to make a3D jump rebid, open 1 NT, my plan would be1D - 3D. With kind regardsMarlowe
the hog
A good 1NT opening.
Finch
1NT in any position.I hugely like 1NT with a suitable hand with a 6-card minor. Nearly as much as I hate it with an unsuitable hand with a 5-card major.
jillybean
Do the 1nt bidders, other than Frances :) open this 1♦ if you were in second position?
the hog
Do the 1nt bidders, other than Frances :) open this 1♦ if you were in second position? 1NT in all seats.

vuroth
Why not 2♦?
pclayton
1N is sensible.
neilkaz
1N is sensible. Agreed and I'd open it in all seats as I want the lead to come to my hand here.
gwnn
Why not 2♦? cause that typically shows 10-14 or some such (minimumish opener with many nice diamonds), this hand is not all that much about diamonds and is not really minimumish. rogerclee
Why not 2♦? This hand is too good (by a lot).
awm
Agree with 1NT in 4th chair. Would open 1♦ in 1st/2nd because of possible slam prospects in diamonds, which will be hard to figure after a 1NT opening. Obviously opposite a passed hand slam is remote. jillybean
So this looks like in 1st/2nd position: 1♦:1M 3♦
inquiry
1NT any of the four positions
andy_h
1NT in 4th seat is perfect!
Guest Jlall
1N in all positions for me but I think its obvious in 4th.
AlternaG
Thank you all for the replies. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sjxxhkj10xxdacjxxx&w=shdc&e=shdc&s=skxha9xdkq109xxckx]399|300|Scoring: IMP4♥[/hv] This is what the hand actually looked like. Small ♦ was the opening lead from Jxxx, and the Q♥ was onside for +620 (and a nice chunk of IMPs our way when the diamond partscore did not produce 620 at the other table). But I didn't know if I was being results oriented, so thanks again.
awm
The auction really should get to 4♥ after P-1♦-1♥-3♦-3♥-4♥ also. But it does play a bit better from the strong hand.
whereagles
1NT or 1♦ seem pretty much the same to me. Probably 1NT will shut out opps more easily. The only flaw I see is pard tranferring to spades and leave us in the 5-2 fit when a 6-3 one was available :)
Codo
There should be no way to miss game with these particular hands anyway. But I agree that this is a clear cut 1 NT bid if you play 1 NT as 15-17. All the honours in the short suits say: Please declare NT from YOUR hand.
