Obviously partner wants me to double but I won't oblige with this hand. I would bid 2H. I do not like passing, even though sometimes balancing will cause us to get too high game is definitely still in play for us, as is playing a partscore and going plus instead of going minus defending 2D. Even if partner jumps to 3N over our 2H bid and goes down a couple, it might be a push vs 90, or it might be a lose 4 on a really bad day where we could have gone +50.

Some would have solved the problem a round

earlier with a 2H opening, but if it is your style

to pass, than partner will know, that he may face

I don't think I'd balance, since it gets us to game virtually always, often going down. I can't even take diamond finesses into partner's hand, which means partner often has significant diamond waste.

 

Double is okay, but RHO will screw you every once in awhile by having 3 (or more!) diamonds. I'd probably just go quietly. I don't expect 2♦ to go down by a lot, even if it does.

It better be going down VERY often. Even if you get to game like always, arent they making 2D a fair amount? And even if theyre going down and you're going down it's a very small swing. Probably if you are going to make game 1 every 6 times you want to be there given that your other option is to defend 2D. And I don't think making game is SO unlikely, you just need to catch a fit.

 

Also, I don't think you're going to be in game anywhere close to always. You're a passed hand and partner would need like 15+ to force to game and there's plenty of room for him to have some random 12-14ish hand that couldn't act where you play a peaceful partscore.

There's no reason why partner should kill you for balancing.

 

Your 2nd seat pass and non-double now will tell him that you're weak, unbalanced and can't stand a penalty pass, often due to a diamond void.

 

Trust your partner and balance with 2♥.

I'm definitely not passing. We are NV and it seems like partner has a few diamonds. I'm not going to X as it may make on some days given our void and lots of major cards, so I will bid 2♥. Game may still be in the picture, or we could be going off in it or 3♥ when 2♦ may make so it's not such a big deal.

 

Partner's seen my original pass and the lack of re-opening x so everything should be a-okay.
