It's not the same as an auction like 1S p 2S p p X where we have learned new information that may make coming in with a hand we would pass 1S with attractive. My partner made the double, which he intended as penalty. I did not recognize it (I guess I should have). When the smoke cleared, WE wound up playing in 3♠x.
