Randy
[hv=d=e&v=b&s=sqxhqxxdjxxcak8xx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] You are South. East is Dealer, at all Vul and opens 1♠.Would you act? If not, if it goes 1♠ -- p -- 2♠ -- Pass back to you, would you act now?
kenrexford
I would pass the first time for certain. I might double the second time, depending on my mood.
Guest Jlall
I would double over 1S, stuff like this is a good reason why. If I passed 1S I would feel compelled to balance in a now way-more-dangerous situation.
rogerclee
I think it is close the first time around, and I would probably double, simply because I cannot stand bidding over 2♠ with this hand. 2♣ is nowhere near the running. Pass the second time around comfortably. My hand is super-defensive.
cjames
dbl first time
the hog
Comfortable pass both times around.

Somehow, my instinct told me not to dbl 1st round. Go figure..
kenrexford
FWIW, one thing I like about doubling late with this pattern, if I do, is that partner will expect a few things accurately. 1. I probably have only three hearts2. My minors may well me lopsided. This means that he is likely to scramble 2NT a lot more.
helene_t
Pass both times, but dbl first time is close.
Fluffy
double first time, everything seems right for that bid, failing to do so I would reopen only against bad players (they always bid 3♠ anyway).
jdonn
I would pass the first time and double the second. I don't hate double the first time, obv hate 2♣ though. I probably wouldn't balance if opponents were playing 2♠ is always three.

mikestar
If I'm going to bid, it will be on the first round. No reason to get to the 3 level with a crappy balanced hand with Qx in the enemy suit. I'm fine with pass throughout.
Edmunte1
I'll pass both times
Guest Jlall
I'm fine with pass throughout. This seems to be the general attitude of a lot of people, and I am really really surprised. It goes against everything I know and believe about bridge to be happy to pass throughout with this hand. You are much tougher to play against if you are constantly putting pressure on the opponents in partscore battles, and imo you win a lot more imps. I think this is great post and great thread comments. I was going to pass throughout...I thought my hand just too weak and only 3h to double...but I see many disagree...and say just compete over 1s even with this hand? Cascade
I am not offering the three-level with ♠ Qx . Double the first time is closest for me - get in the auction and out quickly - but I would probably pass.
