Bidding is pass-pass to you, you open 1S and after partner responds 1NT (semi-forcing) you reach 4

Opening lead is 5 to the king. East cashes Ace as west plays club 2. East continues with diamond 6.

What is your line of play? [/hv]

This is a test post, my first one, but I'll try to stay on point. Ace of Diamonds, top spade, heart to dummy, top heart from dummy. If everyone follows, third heart, top spade. If everyone follows, no problem. If right defender plays a spade honor on the first round and shows out the second, ruffing finesse in spades. Otherwise, play diamonds, hoping for a miracle. If left defender holds four hearts, play two top spades and guess whether she holds a doubleton. If so, play diamonds. Otherwise, play the remaining top spade, hoping for 3-3 or four cards with the heart rail. If right defender has the hearts, play spades, since a diamond play can never work. Left defender can win and give a spade ruff.

Playing low on the first diamond commits you too early. How many defenders would offer you a working diamond play that you can never make yourself? Besides, how else could they talk you out of playing for a singleton King of Diamonds?

If diamonds are void on my left, I'll pay up.

What was their leads ? Because if they play 4th best then it look like the hand is 2155 -- 4414. So i go up with the A of D and play AJ of H followed by 2 top S and a 3rd ruffed with the 9.

The problem i see is that you will miss communication to pull trumps and setup S if you play A followed by D West will return a D and East will ruff with the 8 or if you play 2 top heart but 1 from your hand.

If east has 2S & 4 trumps there is nothing you can do because you cannot handle the D with no losers (but since its an aggrevating problem i assume East had the K :) )
