1 HCP but lots of shape

I really don't think that we should be advocating 3 (or anything but pass) in the B/I forum.

Now, that may be because I just became eligible for some seniors' discounts, but the thought of opening this hand at equal vulnerability in 1st seat makes me feel physically ill.

If I had to open: I'd bid 1N and pass the hoped for transfer... when I was younger (last Sunday?) it would have been 2N

I don't agree with this. Can't be that bad for beginners to read that some experts would consider opening 3H with this hand while that idea would make others physically ill.

I passed when I had this hand btw, but I would have bid if white vs red.

Pass ...

If we move this to the advance and expert forum THEN I would ...

Pass!!!

I can't see any advantage in bidding and you might do serious harm to your partnership trust when partner raises to 4 on his nice 16 count and you escape for 300 or 500.

That's interesting Ken, I've always thought that preempting with hearts is more important than with Spades. Is it a coincidence that McCallum says to "open 4H as much as possible"? Although that's also a rule easy to abuse, I think that there is a lot to say for preempting more aggressively in hearts than in spades.

I think that there is a difference between the three-level and the four-level as to major preempting, personally. I may be wrong, but it seems that whereas 4 seems to be more successful than 4, 3 is more successful than 3.

Pass or 2. 3 overstates the offensive potential. In one partnership this is a clearcut 3 opening at favorable but thats a special agreement.

I think 2 has the merit of describing the offensive potential before it's too late, just in case p has a good hand and is stuck with length in opp's suit. And of course occasionally we may succeed in jamming opps' auction.

Also, if I pass, I probably cannot re-enter the auction since a delayed 2/3 bid would often suggest some awkward 2-suiter, it would not show this hand.

I lean towards pass. I don't want a heart lead and I don't want p to bid 3N on the idea that he can set up hearts.

As for the B/I issue I think it doesn't really matter how strong a player p is and how strong you are yourself. P will assume a disciplined preempt so when he encounters an undisciplined ones he may have tough luck, this applies regardless of level. What does matter is opps' skill level, how likely they are to mess up their own auction if we do preempt and how likely they are to mess it up if we don't.

OK, so say you pass. Now LHO opens a strong club, partner passes and RHO bids 1D showing a weak hand (I believe 0-5 HCP). What do you do next?

It depends upon what we have agreed to play here. But, assuming natural, I'm acting weird. Maybe 1NT.
