rogerclee
Matchpoints, Favorable ♠9 ♥void ♦QJT872 ♣QJ7632 Third seat, P-(P)-? This is similar to an MSC problem from two (?) months ago. If you psyche, feel free to include which psyche you like best: 1NT, 2NT, 3♠, 3♥, etc. As in most places, no strong artificial psyches allowed. whereagles
hum.. either 4♦ + 5♣ or a direct 5♦ opener.
firmit
2NT showing minors fall into category - but not in the poll. If not an option - pass. I have no intention of bewildering partner in first seat.

I have no intention of bewildering partner in first seat. I apologize. I forgot to include that your choice is in third seat. I wouldn't expect anyone to psyche in first or second (or at least seriously believe it to be a +EV action).

Of course - I should've known ;) 1♦ then - I think that falls into the psyche groups!
Gerben42
I open a strong 2NT I guess if I don't have any systemic option like 4NT.

Codo
In descending order: 4 NT (if minors)2 NT (if minors)1 Diamond if both bids are not avaiable (hey I have a 5 loser hand, ;) )
Guest Jlall
A natural 2N is the way to go if you want to psyche with this one imo. It would be textbook if you had 6-6 in hearts and clubs, but hey nothings perfect.
helene_t
2NT wouldnt occur to me. So you take 3N out to 4m when it gets doubled, thereby exposing the psyche?
Guest Jlall
2NT wouldnt occur to me. So you take 3N out to 4m when it gets doubled, thereby exposing the psyche? Hehe, it's not a bid I'd ever actually make anymore, but I remember it used to be successful for me. Yes, run if doubled, don't run if not doubled, etc. It's tough for LHO to bid even if he has like a 17 count (yes I know on the forums everyone would figure out what was happening but in real life you don't think people are psyching 2N and it's more likely they have 19 opp 4 or something). And even if LHO is able to get in somehow how do they find fits etc? Most people have no system over 2N.
gwnn
I think I'd use the "to play" 3NT convention here. It will render everyone totally defenseless.
catatonic
wow ; I have good ears , I pass other than no opener I have no firm idea of what pt has , so wait and see !
han
I would open 4NT for the minors, I didn't know that this was not part of BWS.
jdonn
I would open 4NT for the minors, I didn't know that this was not part of BWS. I still like to play it as regular blackwood. Honest!
mikeh
3♦. Not done yet, either :) I used to psyche a lot, but I found that the better my game, and the better my partner, the less use I had for psyches (but that may simply be because I got too old)
Cascade
We have a 4NT opening for this hand - Both minors at least 5=6.
Cascade
3♦. Not done yet, either :) I used to psyche a lot, but I found that the better my game, and the better my partner, the less use I had for psyches (but that may simply be because I got too old) You need to have a stage in life where you psyche at least a little bit. Psyching is one of those things that it is much better to have a reputation for than actually doing it. I have noticed that usually a good preempt is at least as good as a psyche. I did have a similar hand to the one in this thread but only 6-5 in the minors with a pair of singleton major 4s. I opened 2♠ (spades and a minor - so only a semi-psyche) against a local grandmaster (but not a great player). She doubled and my partner raised to 3♠. RHO now bid 4♥ which became the final contract. I lead ♠ 4 to partner's ace and seeing the six spades in dummy (what a takeout double) partner picked to return a spade for me to ruff. I think partner had a couple of trump tricks to defeat the contract. These people then think i am the villian for my psyche but think nothing of making a takeout double with some 6=3=2=2 shape or similar. finally17
Why not 3N gambling? It's not going to hold, so I can safely bid 4N/5N (maybe) when it gets back to me, and partner will get the idea I think (is there something illegal about this re: psyches that I'm not clear on?). And if partner has a hand where he thinks he can determine my minor and bid 5m, that's fine too. In the meantime I've given opps the most trouble I can possibly give them, and at the same time I've probably conveyed my hand quite well. If it does pass out, I'll take -450. han
Well, why don't you two have a long discussion about what form of blackwood is best. No hurry, it's not likely to come up any time soon.

No hurry, it's not likely to come up any time soon. Actually I do play it specific aces, I just wasn't specific. So I'll cut off that discussion and we can get back to more common meanings, like a weak 6-6 in the minors.
