... good problem.

I guess this is equivalent to nasty hand.

You have too much to pass but I have no idea what is best. When considering an opening bid we have the philosophy of bidding NTs as often as possible on hands that are balanced or nearly balanced and will be hard to bid so maybe Justin's suggestion of 2NT is best.

As a follow-up question, say you double and partner bids either:

(1) 2NT lebensohl.

(2) 3 natural, promising some values (typically 8 with a five-card suit to 11 or so)

What's your plan now?

3 over either.

I know this shows extras not playing ELC, but I made a calculated risk when I doubled to find hearts.

If I Xed I would bid 3C over 2N and 3N over 3C

At the table, I bid 2NT on this hand with no real confidence. Everyone passed and partner put down:

xxx

x

Qx

KT9xxxx

We were playing "systems on" so 3 would not have been to play. I'm sure that some people would've gambled out 3NT on this partner hand which would have been even less successful. If I had doubled instead of bidding 2NT, partner would be bidding clubs at some level. It's not clear whether partner bids lebensohl or 3 or some larger number of clubs (I'm happy to hear opinions on that).

In any case, we have no shot at getting to a making spot (3 fails on the 4-1 break despite other suits behaving nicely). With diamonds 3-3 and some mild defensive help, I managed to get down one in 2NT for -100. It seems 2 is beatable on best defense.

Obviously one hand doesn't prove anything, but pass is the big winner this time.

Hate to be a point counter but I can't see showing 8-11 with 5 points. It is very likely from partner's hand that we have some kind of strong hand that is going to X and bid something and very unlikely we have a normal takeout X shape. Partner representing his hand as a non leb will cause us to get overboard very often in those situations.

heh, it was only lose 4 B) I think that you lose big swings and win small swings by passing (in general, of course bidding could make you go for a number or w/e), usually that's not a great bet.
