whereagles
If you're gonna add 1 pt for the 5th card, make sure the suit is a GOOD one. The hand is worth 14 hcp if you consider it balanced. If something, it's the AKJT of hearts that makes it worth 15, not the feeble clubs. helene_t
Agree with Whereagles as for the 5-card, but the three tens makes me open 1NT anyway.
Gerben42
Good hand, surely on-value for 1NT.
655321
I would open 1NT. Hand is probably good enough anyway, plus we are at favorable - perhaps 1NT may have some preemptive effect if the hand belongs to opponents in spades. I wouldn't criticize someone for opening 1♣ and rebidding 1NT.
rogerclee
I'd open 1♣. Don't think this is clear, but my style is to open a suit with 5-4, and the values here aren't enough to convince me to deviate from that.
Walddk
The K&R Evaluator tells you that the hand is worth 15.10, so yes, an upgrade is reasonable. http://waggle.gg.caltech.edu/~jeff/knr.cgi Bookmark it! It's quite useful. Interesting examples. Some don't like to open 1NT with Axxx Axx Axx Axx, but it's actually worth 16.70. Many open QJxx QJx QJx QJx. I think you agree that it's not worth a 12 count, but did you realise that it's worth a meagre 7.40?! The hand Rain gave me to the left is only worth 19.00 :) Yet everyone would open 2NT. AKT QJT AK QJT98. It has to be this good to become a "20 count". Roland

Apollo81
I'd open 1NT because of the major tens and the tenaces and because 1NT openings are more descriptive/preemptive and we're NV so partner wont be as pushy when inviting and upgrading on value is at least halfway reasonable here
gwnn
isnt it standard for us to be in S (I was there so I know this is 4th seat unfavorable, so Greg apparently thought we are S)
Apollo81
isnt it standard for us to be in S (I was there so I know this is 4th seat unfavorable, so Greg apparently thought we are S) uhh i dunno, maybe? I didnt see an auction so I assumed we were in 1st seat red imps 4th I think I would probably settle for 1♣ here, rebidding 1nt as long as partner is going to invite more aggressively here than in other situations

pclayton
I don't upgrade this and I don't use K and R for balanced hands. QT 5th isn't good reason and JT / Kx are poor reasons. I rebid 1N over 1♠.
cherdano
1N.
P_Marlowe
1C, followed by 1NT. It is certainly reasonable to upgrade this hand, but certainly not matadory. Given that you dont have the HCPs and you dont have the shape, I wouldnot open 1NT. With kind regardsMarlowe
Guest Jlall
1C, agree KR sucks for balanced hands. It counts aces way too much.
brianshark
I don't like the ♠JT holding, for either right-siding or upgrading. 1♣ for me.
Cascade
I am a bit confused about the position. If we are really in 4th seat things are slightly different. More generally I don't stretch to open 5-4-2-2 hands with 1NT. It is something that I will do reasonably happily when other actions are likely to be awkward. This hand is reasonably suit oriented and it will be harder to find our suit fits and potential if I open 1NT. Especially when we belong in clubs. So 1♣ for me. I concede I will rebid 1NT though over a 1♠ response. Curiously playing a weak NT as I often do I will probably still open this 1♣ but then upgrade on the rebid over 1♠ and rebid 1NT (15-17). Actually if we are not vulnerable then our 1NT range is 10-13 and this hand fits in the NT rebid range.
mycroft
I was thinking something similar to Wayne - 1NT is 14-16 for me here, so I'm bidding 1NT. But were I playing 15-17, I'd still bid 1NT, because the other option is 1D, not 1C... In standard, I'll probably not upgrade it. QTxxx in the unboss suit doesn't help as often as one would hope.
