unfavorable 4S

Easy X. Don't roll over and die, it may be a double game hand, or they may just be down a couple (4S with 8 tricks is certainly reasonable). If you pass you will get stolen from too much.

Double. Easier at other vulnerabilities. Prepared to scribble -790 on my private.

Someone once said, "believe your red/white opps"

Believing them means they have 10 tricks for their red/white 4S bid? I guess we should always save when they bid 4S red/white. I guess X should never be passed and should just get taken out every time since RHO always has 10 tricks...

What was double?

If double was takeout, partner has an easy 5.

Really don't agree. Just because a double does not show a trump stack does not mean partner should randomly pull to the 5 level. He must act on the assumption you can beat them and his pulling must be with the expectation to pass. You would X on Kxx Axx KQx xxxx as well. Passing with partners hand is normal.

I would pass with Kxx Axx KQx xxxx.

I play double of 4 as takeout, not cards. I dislike having as many as 2 spades for this double, I certainly won't have Kxx.

Agree that if double is just cards, and could include Kxx spade, that opener's pass is correct. Also, I would pass the double as opener (nowhere to go) with Qx KT98x xxx KQJ. But on the actual hand I believe bidding is correct opposite a takeout double.

Ok I think you are losing a ton if you pass on good balanced hands then in order to keep your X as pure takeout. Good balanced hands are the most common hand type that I see, so I am happy to double with those. If partner took out my X after I Xed with the hand I gave I would feel confident that he has decent chances in 5H.

Pass is clear over this double.

Double even if 'takeout' at this level does not show 4+=4+ in the minors. Therefore bidding with some minimum 5-4-2-2 hand is asking for disaster.

No.

Pass is clear if double is cards.

If by " 'takeout' " you mean cards, then yes, pass is clear.

But by " 'takeout' " I mean takeout: ie short spades, and support for the other suits. Passing with a good second suit and no defence is asking for disaster.

I guess this is just a nomenclature or style thing.

We call our doubles 'takeout' or 'negative' with the condition that higher doubles are less shape specific.

If you don't like doubling with two or three spades there must be a lot of hands with values that you cannot bid.
