Easiest pass ever? I mean most people wouldn't even open this hand and now you want to come in at the 6 level when partner couldn't find a bid over 5S?! You are playing right into their hands if you bid with this.

In traditional bridge, an opening of 5 showed an expectation of making 11 tricks, and asked partner to raise with either the A or K of spades... I have played bridge for almost 35 years and never seen an opening 5 major call.

While this tradtional meaning is rare, I can't imagine a 1st seat 5 on any other hand.

QJ1098xxx AKQ10 A void would be a classic hand...ok, maybe he should hold the heart J instead of the 10 :)

Anyway, white v white, we'd need to be able to take 10 tricks for a balance to make sense, and I don't see why we should be betting that this is more likely than not.... and the downside is huge... rho may be loaded in the minors.... imagine catching AKx xxxxx xx xxx in dummy... nice hand for 6 :)

how about

KQJxxxxxxx

x

xx

so why on earth would i open 5 on that hand? An overwhelming desire to get a minus score? A desire to screw partner, who is yet to have a chance to bid?

Admittedly the odds are 2-1 that any big hand is held by an opp, but surely the odds are that either no-one can bid, or, that if they do bid, it's wrong for them?

Last hand of the tournament, I was not in the mood to make a correct pass and wanted to gamble (after a full week of scary IMPs, playing the most solid overcalls ever), so bid 5NT.

It hit gold.

Defence led A, and didn't read 8 properly playing another round, after drawing trumps my partner (a junior japanese whose name I cannot spell), run the 4!, for another thing I didn't see in my life.
