helene_t
i balance with a pass Me too. We also play system on here. Yes, pass is to play in balancing seat. Good system. But seriously, if this is not even close to 1NT, would you ever bid 1NT with a passed hand, then?
Gerben42
Me too. We also play system on here. I pass. Wouldn't be the first time that opener doubles next to show that his ♣ was short... Anyway after a possibly 3-card opening, a passed hand natural 1NT does not seem very useful.
gnasher
But seriously, if this is not even close to 1NT, would you ever bid 1NT with a passed hand, then? This pipless, shapeless hand is a long way from being a maximum for an initial pass. You could make it much better without changing the high card content - xx J10xx A98x AJ10 has the same 10 points, but is worth about a trick more. (You might choose not to balance because of the spade shortage, but that's another matter.)
the hog
Pd didn't bid over 1C? A clear cut balance in that case and no, not even remotely close.

Considering you can be 4333 and a 12 count and passed initially, there's plenty of room for a 1N call.
mikestar
How about balancing with a double? if partner is weak and the opener has a monster, this gives us a better chance to escape than 1NT. If partner has a fair hand with long clubs, let them do the escaping. I certainly wouldn't argue with a pass, however. But if you are going to take an aggressive view, why not double? han
I was playing in the main bridge club against random opponents and doubled, partner made 1S.
gwnn
I was playing in the main bridge club against random opponents and doubled, partner made 1S. how would the random opps have fared in 1♣?
han
I was dummy and don't remember the hands except that RHO didn't have a pass and my partner shouldn't have made it.
matmat
I was dummy and don't remember the hands except that RHO didn't have a pass and my partner shouldn't have made it. heh. moral being, don't draw conclusions about what good/bad bidding is when your opponents are monkeys?
han
I didn't intend any moral. I was just curious what people would do in a serious game, and then I thought I should tell when I had the hand and what happened.

But seriously, if this is not even close to 1NT, would you ever bid 1NT with a passed hand, then? Rarely. If the most partner can have is around 13/14 otherwise she might overcall 1NT or find and offshape double. Then there is not much gain from balancing and there is a big downside. You might suffer a big penalty and they might even have a game.
dake50
Is the question "is balance a long-term winner?" Pass for me. Or "would I resist some fun with this hand?" 1H to see who gets this right.
CSGibson
If partner can't overcall and RHO can't respond, then LHO probably has a hand he was planning on jump shifting. Why give him the opportunity now, possibly catching his partner with a fit and making game?
