Partner passes and it goes:

p-1-p-1NT*

p-p-?

5+, forcing 1 round

You are 65 imps up in the last board and somehow you feel that Rightie doesn't promise 5+ hearts OR 11+ hcp.

Do I read the vulnerability right? We are white vs red? That makes this is a simple problem. Just pass. If RHO has been monkeying you will get 300 or so in. The most you stand to loose is 120 points (3 IMPs) when you can make 4. The much more likely scenario in that case is that they will be off in 1NT while they could have made 3 (winning 6-8 IMPs) or we could have made 3 (winning 2-4 IMPs).

Pass.

X would be for the minors, maybe partner

is awake, seeing that opener passed a forcing

bid, ... but X is certainly for the minors.

2H should be natural, ... but if I am +65, and we

are playing the last board, I dont need stress.

You could have overcalled 1NT the round before,

not perfect, but you would have been done with the

hand.

With kind regards

Marlowe

I read something written by Marshall Miles in his book Inferences at Bridge where he suggested the auction 1 - P - 1N - P - P - 2 was still Michaels, I'm a little worried that partner will play me for balancing with a Michaels bid if I bid 2 now. I realize there is a difference between the two auctions, but I'm still worried that I'll confuse partner.

!!

1-p-1NT-p;

p-2!!

Nobody passes 1 with 5-5 in the majors.

The example hand given was:

[hv=s=sk7543hq8432d6ct4]133|100|[/hv]

I would pass that hand, as I am a big believer in not making shape calls unless I believe we have a good chance of playing the hand. Miles also makes that argument, but goes on to say that in the balancing position 2 as michaels is safe, since partner rates to have a fit for one of our majors on the bidding, and a decent hand.

RHO has announced that he's psyched, so the only suit that the opponents are known to hold is spades. Your actions should mean roughly the same as they would after:

  1S pass pass

Double would be for takeout of spades, and 2H would be natural but an underbid. I would bid 3H.

Because of the vulnerability, it's tempting to pass, and I might do this if I weren't defending a lead. However, this might work out badly if they had a heart stop and a running suit. By bidding 3H. I hope to get us to the same contract as at the other table.

If I act at all, I double showing a penalty double of hearts. But at favourable I might just take my 100s as they probably have a minor to run to.

heh, well you are a mathematical lock no matter what you do so in that sense nothing matters, presumably OP just wants to do the right bridge thing in order to learn to play better etc.
