gwnn
Robson/Segal would probably bid 3♦... I'm not sure what I'd bid at the table, those spades look pretty chunky...
helene_t
If "usually 44 reds" means just that, and not "usually 4/5", then we are beyond the LOTT level. I wonder if it makes sense to play this double as promising (or "promising") five hearts.
whereagles
"Usually 44" means the expectation is a 44. It doesn't prohibit a 54 or even a 55.
Apollo81
3♦ since the last thing we want to do is excite partner, and 3♥ will do just that. I think rebidding spades is awful since partner could easily be 1552 or something
P_Marlowe
3H. With kind regardsMarlowe
cjames
3♦ for me.
jdonn
WTP 3♦. I don't think "usually 4-4" means anything but "4-4 is a more common distribution to be dealt than 5-4 or 5-5" since anything longer than 4-4 will double anyway. mikeh
I opt for the discouraging 3♦ for the reasons given by others. BTW, another factor is that partner, with a good hand and 64 in the reds, will usually bid 3♥ with 6=4 but may well choose double with 4=6, especially if the hearts are chunky and the diamonds relatively weak (with chunky hearts, he may fear you won't introduce a weak 4 card heart suit, and, in any event, he may fear not having another chance to suggest the heart suit should LHO bid more clubs). whereagles
Thx all. Hands were ♠ xx♥ AQJ9♦ KQT9x♣ xx ♠ KJTxx♥ Kxx♦ Jxx♣ Jx I posted this because it's a common situation where one might wonder which suit to bid. Diamonds is best because if pard has a 5 card suit, it is more likely to be diamonds than hearts. At MPs, with 5 hearts and 4 diamonds, he might have tried 3♥ on his own instead. In this case both 3♥ and 3♦ are a make, though. You just need to guess who has the spade ace, and that's easy after LHO leads the ♣K :)
pclayton
3♦.
