West North East South

 Pass  Pass  Pass  1NT

 Pass  Pass  Pass

Here my pard ( private level, I know some b/i do not open 12hcp hand) as west(dealer) pass the 12hcp hand however I'm not interesting if she should have open or not but curios if south was the dealer and open 1nt how do you get in the auction with those hands.

Of course passing the West hand is ridiculous, but as you said that is not the point.

East has an easy bid when 1NT is passed around to him.

The actual bid depends on your methods, but 5/5 in the reds, you would much prefer to play in one of your suits than watch while partner leads your singleton (don't your partners always lead your singleton?) and declarer wraps up 7 or 8 tricks.

On the actual hand you are likely cold for game, but that is not why you must bid. You bid because it is likely to save a partscore swing - +110 instead of -120, or similar.

Hi,

there are several methods out there.

The main reason is to allow to overcall

with 1-suited hands and with 2-suited

hands.

One simple method is DONT, a double

shows a arbitary 1-suiter, a suit bid

shows a 2-suiter, the suit bid and a higer

ranking.

You loose the penalty double, but gain the

option to bid all 1-suited and all 2-suited

hands, and end up on the 2 level.

Playing DONT, you bid 2D, partner will pass.

With kind regards

Marlowe

(1) West hand should open. I agree with passing some twelves, but this hand includes the T and the T9, as well as not being a 4333 pattern and allowing you to open a decent suit (diamonds). This is a very nice balanced 12-count.

(2) East hand should open in 3rd chair. With so much shape and a good five-card heart suit (three of top four honors) it usually pays to get in. This is especially true at white vs. red. Whether to open 1 or 2 is probably a matter of style, but passing with such a hand in this seat and vulnerability is probably not good tactics.

(3) East hand should balance over 1NT-P-P. What to bid depends on your methods. Playing natural, it makes sense to bid 2 (your best suit). Various other methods out there have ways to show two-suited hands.

passing 12 counts is not "b/i". Indeed, there are many 12 counts that only a b/i would open (assuming strong NT)... That said, the W hand is indeed a clear cut opener and the E hand also an opener or balancer. I have to echo 655321: my partner always leads my singleton unless I have a void.

I would open both the East and West hands: 1 in 1st seat with the West hand, and 2 with the East hand in 3rd seat.

If the auction went as shown, East should balance with whatever bid is in his arsenal to show both red suits.

For your question:

I agree that you should choose an Defence system against their 1 NT opening. You simply need it quite often. DONT or Landy are the easiest in my opinion, but choose what you want.

But if you are not yet ready for this memory load and like to play natural, you should still bid 2 Heart with the East Hand after 1 NT pass pass. A 2551 hand is much stronger then it looks like, so 2 Heart should be okay even opposite no fit in partners hand.

For the suggested opening in 3. Hand: Yes, most advanced and expert players stretch to open something in 3. Hand, just to show pd a good lead and to make it difficult for 4. hand. But if you do this, you have to have some agreements how to find out the difference between normal openings in third hand and weak openings. There is quite some stuff to learn, so I don´t know if this is the next lesson to learn. I guess there is more important stuff then this. So if you want to make it more difficult for South, try a weak two with 2 next time you have a 5/5 hand in 3. seat. Works great quite often.

To me the west hand is a clear opener, but that's not the main point here.

The east hand is a just as clear 3rd seat opener. I prefer 1 (or maybe 2 if it shows a 2-suiter).

Having missed the first two hurdles, passing this out with the east hand would never enter my mind. That's the biggest and decisive error.
