Everything's working

How come some of these 'SF sectional' hands are MPs, and some are IMPs? Is this two different events?

p.s. I think double of 3D is enough here.

After 5, it's unclear for them what to do. So I bid that. I have two working cards and ZERO defense.

What concerns me is that if I bid 5 it may give them the choice of bidding 5M for +650 or taking +800 from 5D.

Obviously this depends a bit on partner's style of 2NT bid, but if he thinks, say

Qx

x

A10xxx

KJxxx

is good enough at favourable, then you are losing 500 in 'top' tricks plus any club ruffs or possible loss of control going, while they probably aren't going to bid a slam.

I really think 5D is too much, although obviously it could work.

Frances, that's all nice and dandy, but the expectancy of pard's hand makes, in my opinion, 5 a statistical winner.

If you have mechanisms that enable you to sort out what pard's ODR is, by all means use them. But otherwise I think it's just better to play the odds and bid 5.

Yes. It is common in America to have sectionals (weekend congresses for those across the pond) that feature a two-session pair game on Saturday and a strati-flighted swiss team game on Sunday scored by victory points. The victory point scale depends on the part of the country, and I heard that they use the 30-point scale to combat pro teams where the client only plays half in the midwest - think Wales or north of Manchester.

5, this is why vulnerability exists.

Exactly my thoughts!

I bid 5 and opener instantly bid 5, and then responder bid 5. After some pauses for thought, they ended the bidding.

The deal was something like this:

[hv=n=sxxhkdakxxxckjxxx&w=skqj9xhaqjxdxcxxx&e=saxxht98xxdjxxcax&s=sxxxhxxxdqxxxcqxx]399|300|[/hv]

Partner cashed a top diamond and switched to a club. When hearts weren't guessed they were down one.
