(most of them have high govt. positions already which normally take up a lot of time you'd think). BTW the Dutch newspaper "Volkskrant" has an internet poll with about 30 questions so you can see which US candidate fits you most (in Dutch and English) here: http://extra.volkskrant.nl/kieskompas/ So far 90% of the participants get the advice to vote for a Democratic candidate (tells you a bit about what Europe would vote if they could vote a US president...) Such a campaign costs millions. Even if they would have to compensate their employer for taking time off work it would be a minor issue. I would be bloody annoyed if I voted for someone who then spent most of his time getting away from the elected office... Simply a case of "too much campaigning" if you ask me. Once the Danish minister of housing was asked if it was fair to his voters that he gave up his parliament seat to become minister of housing. His answer was that he assumed his voters wanted him to have as much influence as possible. I thought the journalist could have asked a less trivial question. In 6 years my senator......voted 4 times to change the name of mylocal mail.... post office.....yes...that is all he did......but now he runs for president........ Those in Congress make most of their money by selling tax breaks to corporations. That occupation dovetails efficiently with campaigning for higher office. The legislature was supposed to meet after planting, write a bunch of bills, and be gone before harvest (and a second time after harvest but before the heavy snows). That's why they have recess appointments, for example. Other than for votes, Senators don't actually need to show up at all- their jobs are all done with phones, faxes, and the Internet these days. Note that Edwards, Romney, Guilliani, and Huckabee are all currently unemployed. McCain, Clinton, Biden, and Dodd are all currently Senators. I don't know how Richardson, a sitting governor, does it. joshs Posted January 10, 2008 Report Share Posted January 10, 2008 Well one can say that our politicians aren't being hired to sit in comittee meetings but are instead hired to give speaches about matters of public policy-- which is exactly what they are doing on the road while campaigning.
