Your bid?

I would bid 1 NT on the first and X on the second example.

Or vice versa, who knows.

And I have a third example . You are in second seat and hold:

653

6543

653

654

What do you open and why?

While double seems normal, there is a case to be made for bidding 2. Some reasons:

After 1-P-P-2-2-P-P you can double. After 1-P-P-X-2-P-P you're stuck.

If opener doesn't bid again, partner will probably bid 2 over 2 with five of them and a decent hand. So you're not that likely to miss a real heart fit.

On the other hand, if you double partner will bid a four-card heart suit long before a four-card diamond suit. Partner may even bid 3 on a four-card suit, especially if opener competes to 2.

And he must play 3 or 4 Heart in a 4-3 Fit whith the short hand ruffing the spades and having an nice 5 card side suit to develop? And this at matchpoints?

Poor partner. He is always so unhappy if we just write a mere 80 % in our scorecard.

Seriously, OF course there is a downside for the double. But the upsides are so much higher, that noone should bid anything else but X.

Ok, lemme own up. I doubled, of course, and after LHO jumped to 3 partner trotted out the semi-dreaded 4. which was not a success in the moysian. After the hand, partner berated me quite strongly for doubling with this hand. Just doing a little reality check. At the time I was 100% convinced that X was the right percentage action., and I remain so now.
