pclayton
Saw a bid tonight in the JEC match that I've never seen before: (1♥) - 5♥ How would you take 5♥?

inquiry
Exclusion, overcaller is going to place the contract with his next bid (after hearing the response). I guess he has a hand like... KQT void AKQJTxxx AK or similar

jdonn
Call me crazy but I would say natural. The second choice would be Michaels but that really doesn't make much sense to me on this level. It still makes more than exclusion, which I can't believe was included to begin with, or has gotten votes...
neilkaz
Exclusion as nothing else comes close to making sense to me to be honest.
cherdano
Wow Josh...Michaels doesn't make sense to me, it must be better to start with 2♥ so that we can clarify the second suit by the time we reach the 5-level. Exclusion is obviously crazy undiscussed but it is what I would pick if you forced me to make an agreement about this bid.
jdonn
Exclusion is what comes to mind as a player's first bid opposite a partner who has never bid? I swear if I made this problem I wouldn't have thought to include that option, and it makes less and less sense every time I think about it. I feel like everyone is playing a practical joke on me. Ok very funny what do you all really think? Where I feel like I am...1. bizarro Short for Bizarro-worldo. The opposite of the real world. Good is evil, round is square, hello is goodbye. cherdano
Josh, to shock you even more: Some play an opening bid of 4N to ask about specific aces!!! Before partner had any chance to bid!!! The world is bizzzaarrrooooooooooo!!!!
inquiry
Well, i would never take it for super-duper michaels, but i kibitzed the hand in question, and i can tell you that either super-duper michaels or exclusion would fit the hand in question.... and certainly would if the spade 9 was exchanged for the spade 8. The redouble that followed the double would be nice to know if that was a "step response" or an obvious rescue yourself bid. I will take a look on Bridgebrowser, but honestly, how many of these do you think there will be?
blackshoe
It means "partner, I know we have no agreement on this bid, but I trust you to figure out what I'm doing" the bidder is dreaming.

blackshoe
If it's exclusion, which suit is trumps? Why?
helene_t
I will take a look on Bridgebrowser, but honestly, how many of these do you think there will be? I made that bid once, it was a misclick. I suspect BB will find a few misclicks and dumpings, maybe a single preempt against an artificial 1♥ opening, and one or two exclusion/micheals/whatever hands. inquiry
If it's exclusion, which suit is trumps? Why? What suit is going to be trumps? What ever suit the 5♥ bidder bids over the response. Why? Because he must only need to know ACES outside of the void suit to decide between six and seven level.. (and if partner has no aces, the to stop in 5S if spades is his suit, and he needs just two aces for certain slam).
Walddk
No agreement of course, but I would take it as 11 tricks in his hand with spades, void in hearts, disregard that ace. One-suited, two-suited, don't know. So the responses should be quite easy. 5♠ with no working ace, 6♠ with one and 7♠ with two. Number of spades irrelevant. P_Marlowe
Hi, Michaels, because the cue is always Michaelsin my partnership, ok ... my partner would neverbid this, because he could achieve the samewith 2H, 3H, ..., but Michaels it is, and we dont play Exclusion. Oppossite a stranger no idea. With kind regardsMarlowe
Fluffy
This means I have 11 tricks in spades. so raise me if you have 1. ♥A might or might not be included as an extra trick, I think it should not.
pclayton
The person that made this bid held: ♠KQJTxx♥void♦AKQxxx♣x and intended it as Exclusion. Of course its much easier to make this call when it's a friendly match and you announce it as Exclusion at the table :) 5♠ was strangely doubled on your left (would you send it back?) and pard put down a 3433 bust, but +850 was the result. inquiry
while sipping coffee this morning, I search over 220,000,000 auctions for all (1H)-5H and (1S)-5S auctions in the bridgebrowser database (Jec's 5H bid from yesterday is not there yet, obviously). I found 32 such auction.. at none of these 32 tables was the auction duplicated at any other table. (BTW, jec held KQJT86 of spades if memory serves me well....) Of the 32 auctions, one was identified as a misclick via alert. The average resultof the 32 five level cue-bids WAS HORRIBLE, and if you look at the hands you might see why... pclayton
Thanks Ben. I noticed there's a 10 bagger on there. I saw a 10 bagger on BBO for only the 2nd time in my life yesterday.

jtfanclub
So the responses should be quite easy. 5♠ with no working ace, 6♠ with one and 7♠ with two. Number of spades irrelevant. Roland Seems like it would make more sense to have it be 5♠ with no aces, 6♣ with one, 7♣ with 2. Then you could use it for any suit.... Besides, don't you want partner to play it? I don't see any reason to use it as natural or Michaels. But I might need to jump with Exclusion.
whereagles
I actually have an agreement about this. If opening strong: michaels, preemptive with huge shape. If opening weak (e.g. 3M-5M): michaels, with around 11 tricks in ♠/m.
