Apollo81
None vulnerable, IMPs AKxxAxxxAxxxx 1♦-(4♠)-p-(p)?? What call would you make? What are the logical alternatives, if any?
gwnn
i'd pass logical alternative could be a penalty X.
Walddk
Pass. Double would be take-out for me and I really don't want to hear 5♣. Yes, 4♠ will no doubt go down, but I will settle for my undoubled undertrick(s). Likewise, if my partner had doubled, it would be take-out. He did not although he is short in spades. Give me 1444 instead and it's a different ballgame. I'd double now. Roland
jdonn
No LA to pass for advanced player. For a beginner I might be persuaded double is a LA.
pclayton
Pass. I don't play double as penalty here, but its not specifically takeout either.

Codo
No LA to pass for advanced player. For a beginner I might be persuaded double is a LA. Because just beginners play neg. double just up to 4 Heart and 4 NT as takeout? Yes typical beginner thinking. I know some partnerships who play neg. double up to 4 HEart. They can double for penalties. If you have this agreement, double is an alternative. However with no agreement or the knowledge that X is take out or even optional, there is no LA! What call would you make? What are the logical alternatives, if any?Pass, and take the plus. I play neg x's thru 3♠, as do a lot of folks. Here a double should be "cooperative," showing cards, not strictly penalty. That said, if we dbl, P is too likely to bid 5 ♣, so I don't really see an LA. :)
