How much to raise pards overcall

Recommended Posts

1NT for me.

Points are right.

Stoppers OK.

Partner's next action will be OK.

The opponents have difficulty handling 1NT.

I keep the 10-fit secret.

The most likely high card of interest to the opponents that they may have to guess, the club Queen, is hidden by misdirection.

You are likely to have at least a ten card diamond fit. Your heart king rates to be poorly placed (it might not be), your spade honors rate to be well placed (they might not be).

The law might suggest you bid to 10 tricks (4), and 4 has an added benefit that opener with a spade fit has his cue-bid of 4 removed. On the other hand, your shape is not great (5332 worse of the 5 card fits) and all your values are in their suits. And remember, I FOUGHT THE LAW suggest that just having a ten card fit is not a good reason to bid four. Looking at your hand, the WP is not very high and your SST is not great.

So this is almost a lawful 4 and a IFTL bid of at most 3 and probably just a 2 bid by their standards (others may disagree). IF we were not red I would bid 4 -- just to make it hard for LHO to cuebid to show spade support. As it is, I will bid 3. If we were red and they were white, i would bid only 2. I am not very happy about the quality of my support or the lack of purity of the hand (I have honors in their suit and none in ours) or the distribution. I have a sneaking idea that 2 will be the winner most of the time.

IMPS all RED, you deal and pass.  LHO opens 1, pard overcalls 1, RHO bids 1

P 1 1 1

Whats your bid with:

K J x

K x x

x x

Pass?

1NT?

2?

3?

Other?

2d but close to 3d.

too many hcp and too little shape for 3 or 4d me thinks.

I would always bid 3 on this hand. At vulnerable, I like this to be more of a mixed raise (i.e. usually not broke) but regardless it seems about right.

It's not unlikely that opponents have a club fit on this hand. That's the suit where I have two small. It seems like bidding 1NT, they may reel off the first six club tricks and we could easily land down two.

Bidding 1NT or 2 also leaves space for them to find a ten-card club fit (i.e. opener rebids 2 on six, responder now knows to compete with four clubs) or an eight-card spade fit (opener can bid 2 or make a support double).

The 3 call takes away the support double, forces opener to overbid slightly on some hands where he has four spades, and makes it very difficult for either opponent to compete in clubs even if they have a ten-card fit divided 6-4 or 5-5.

Bidding 4 just seems like too much -- my hand is pretty defensive in nature and partner's 1 is usually a decent hand too. No reason to push here on flat shape and weak diamonds.
