  1. 1. Opponents opened 1 diamond - what is 2NT?

    • I have no idea.
      2
    • 2 lowest suits (this case clubs and hearts)
      59
    • 2 any suits (except for diamonds).
      0
    • 20-21 or any other semilar 2NT range.

    • Something else.

Clubs and hearts, at least 5-5. With clubs and spades I bid 1, with both majors 2. I don't like a jump to the three-level to show two specific suits (Ghestem for example).

1. I would probably forget.

2. I like the three-level for one-suited pre-empts.

As others, I'd assume s and s.

However, the question is perhaps ambiguous...is the 2NT overcall in direct or balancing seat?

Right, in balancing seat it should be 19-21 or some such.

Agreed, although Hedy Grey, during a vugraph broadcast the other day, said that for her the range is 17-19. I confess that I have not seen that concept before.

Well I suppose that she plays

1NT 10-14

X and then 1NT 15-17-

2NT : 17-19-

X and then 2NT 19+-21

I also prefer to keep 2NT to show basically the same stength as a 2NT opening.

Most likely, but she will not always be in a position to rebid 1NT.

1 pass pass double

Now, if the response is 2mi the rebid is 2NT to show 15-16 and that is not sound opposite what may well be a weak hand. Neither is it a splendid idea to let a direct 2NT show 17-19. 17 opposite nothing perhaps?

Sorry for being a bit off-topic here.

Of course, the $64,000 question is: what did your partner (who I'll bet says "Expert" in his profile) actually have?

Since this is posted here, the 2NT bidder or his partner thought that it showed the minors because 1 could be short. Just a guess. Some think, for reasons only known to themselves, that it always shows the two lowest suits, unbid or not.

So the same would apply after 1.

The ACBL convention card still has a checkbox for Jump to 2NT = Minors. And I played in the annual New England Individual Regional this week, and plenty of the convention cards I was handed had this box checked. Lots of the players in this tournament are people who normally only play social bridge, and this is their only foray into tournament duplicate bridge.
