Your call?

5. Although I'm never a fan of three-suiters for offense, I see many 'perfect' minimum overcalls opposite which slam is quite good. For instance,

AKxxxx xxx Kx Kx. Partner should have some idea that my heart void has increased the offensive potential of this hand substantially.

Some people are going to laugh at me for saying this but I have the agreement that 5C shows spade support (only because we are a passed hand). With this agreement I think that 5C is superior to 5H, but mabe both are too much. Close call.

Of course 5 shows spade support. How could a passed hand have a club suit good enough to introduce at the 5 level?

No reason to laugh at you. Isn't there consensus among expert players? I would also (fit)bid 5, intending to follow up with 5 over 5. That shows the hand very well in my opinion.

You are right. It is funny that you felt trepidation in announcing the obviously right answer.

Is it really that clear we are safe at the 5-level? Would anyone complain if partner overcalled 2S on: AKxxx, Qx AJx, xxx?

I'm following my own advice, here, and that is game before slam. Although I'd like to bid more, the opponents have robbed me of the room I need to bid anything other than:

4S

In your example, pd overcalled on virtually 10 HCps with a passed partner and you still have a play in 5 Spade. So 4 Spade is a clear underbid.

I join Roland in 5 Club followed by 5 Heart if possible. This shows my hand.

Huh? AKxxx, AJx=10 points?

Besides, when contemplating slam, the 5-level should be a virtual certainty, not simply have "a play".

Give partner a much better hand such as AKxxx, Axx, xx, Kxx and the 5-level is still not safe, even with the given heart lead.

Although it is a close call, I don't think we have enough hand to compel partner to have more than a minimum overcall - and yes, we may miss slam, which is one of the reasons opponents bid this way - another reason is to push us into unmakeable contracts. I'm pretty certain we have a play for 4S - above that, it is simply guesswork.

5

Either partner overcalled with length in (and thus has a relatively sound hand) or the opponents will most likely continue bidding them. I would rather that they sacrifice at maximum level; I don't want to walk it up to 5, which is the likely result of bidding 4 on this round.
