Free
Playing a tournament (matchpoints!) RHO opens 3♠ in first seat. You hold:[hv=d=e&v=b&s=sk3haq98dkq7543c2]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] What do you bid?

Apollo81
3NT, running to 4♦ if doubled.
hrothgar
3NT, running to 4♦ if doubled. I gave consideration to two calls: 1. 3NT2. Pass At the table, I suspect that I would bid 3N
jdonn
I think I would double to leave as many options as possible open. If partner bids clubs I'll bid diamonds. I don't play ELC, I'm simply overbidding if that happens. 3NT removes 3♠X and 4♥ (essentially) from consideration, and I think pass is simply wacko. Codo
I don´t know what wacko is, but whatever it is, I use the wacko bid of pass.I have a nice shape and 14 hcps. But how much do I need for a nice 3 NT? Maybe something like Qx, xxx,Axx,Akxxx in pds hand? But wait, he won´t pass with this, will he? So I pass now. Of course I will miss some nice games opposite xx, KJxx,Ax,xxxxx, but so is life. I don´t play elc either, so X followed by 4 Diamond shows this shape but unluckily more playing strength. This would be nice with Kx, AQxx,AKQxxx,x.

In fact you might need the AK of clubs less. xx xxx Axx JTxxx is a finesse (that I admit probably won't work) for 3NT. I know I didn't bid 3NT. But it will almost always be the case that something is better than passing. By the way, Wacko - see wackyWacky - Eccentric or irrational: a wacky person. Crazy; silly: a wacky outfit. I don't play ELC either but flexibility after a high-level double is part of the game nowadays. Paul
