whereagles
Obvious opening to me. One should open on any excuse these days. Besides, if responder has a major, your major quacks become useful.
joker_gib
I open too ! Good 5 cards suit...
nick_s
The formula I use these days is: length of 2 longest suits + HCP + defensive tricks. If this is 21.5 or more I open NV. If this is 22 or more, I open Vul. I used to use LTC <= 7 and 1.5 defensive tricks and HCP >= 10, but I found this tended to overvalue 3-suited hands. Yes I open, but I'm not happy about it. I'll stretch further to open 1M than 1m, but this one is ok. The best opening for the hand is of course 1 (weak) NT.
P_Marlowe
Hi, I open. The main reason: I believe the field will open, and the merrits of pass are not high enoughto compensate this. A secondary reason, you dont have a real rebidproblem, your most likely rebid is 1NT, whichshows your shape and your point count, and evenafter 2C, you can bid 2D without any real issues. But I can understand, if you would pass. With kind regardsMarlowe
awm
Having a good five-card diamond suit makes a lot of difference to me. I'd open, but if you move a small diamond to any other suit I would pass.

Cascade
The formula I use these days is: length of 2 longest suits + HCP + defensive tricks. If this is 21.5 or more I open NV. If this is 22 or more, I open Vul. This is seriously flawed. It severly under-values this hands biggest asset ♦AQJxx. This feature in a hand with 12 hcp makes this hand not even close to a pass in my opinion. You have to take into account the location of your honours. AQxxAQxxxxxxx 8 (4♠ + 4♥) + 12 (hcp) + 2 defensive tricks = 22 and is a fine opening by your evaluation ... but AQAQxxxxxxxxx counts to the same 22 and is clearly an inferior opening - whether or not it crosses the border to pass will depend on your personal style and partnership agreement but it is clearly not as good as the hand above. I would judge it is something like 1.5-2 hcp worse.

This method was introduced to me about 3 months ago and seemed to be working fairly well. From now on, I'll be taking this one with a grain of salt too. MomoTheDog
I open, seize the initiative of the opening bid!
rogerclee
I pass, but I think it's really borderline. The suit and the lack of a big rebid problem just don't compensate for the fact that this hand is not good. I'd open if my Jxx were JTx. jdonn
Wow isn't this automatic to open at any scoring/seat/vul? Tough crowd! It's a heck of a lot safer than having to overcall diamonds next round.
foo
http://www.gg.caltech.edu/~jeff/knr.cgi?ha...xx+Jxx+AQJxx+Qx K&R (Qxx Jxx AQJxx Qx) = 10.30 DK = 10 IOW, this has the expected trick taking strength of the average 10 count.
