I click it often to see what threads are getting a lot of lookers, especially if a thread is getting a little too much attention and boardering on possible site violations. Also, if i am about to log off, but i posted something and i want to see the reply too, i click to see if anyone is replying to that thread. I guess seeing that your friend is in the same location as you gives you feeling that you're in a chat room rather than a less convivial forum.
