Did I do this to myself?

No good solution.

For what it is worth, I have played a technique where a 1NT direct overcall with this sort of hand is used. You need a lot of checkback sequences, though. As a simple example, a Responder who would normall bid 2NT or 3NT would instead "transfer" to spades to check on stoppers. Similarly, Smolen or a 2♠ bid after Stayman also check on stoppers.

Without that, you pass twice, I think.

I use to pass these hands over 1S, but no more. I have too much and I do have support for all the suits. I would have doubled the first round. Not popular perhaps, but it has helped me since i started doing it.

100% agreement here, Ben. 15 HCP and good support in the 3 card suits is just enough for me, inspite of 4333. I find doubling now means that I have fewer uncomfortable decisions later in comp.

On the 2nd go, I have to pass as well. three small when the opps don't have a fit isn't pretty and we are all vul at MP.

If the opps make 1NT thats 90 for them, but if I double and we go off 1 in some 4-3 fit, thats 100 for them.

If we are beating 1NT by a trick we get 100, but if we make 2m on the nose we get 90.

Perhaps we are beating 1NT but after our double, the opps end up making 2 of something ? Perhaps we end up doubled and off 1 or 2 at the 2 level for a near 0. I think the risk of this is too much and won't be offset by the miracle 4 we may find (likely taking some gambling in the bidding to get that high). I think the risk won't be offset by the times we push the opps higher elsewhere and often if we make our 2 bid, we can take 1NT down 1.

Just my opinion .. neilkaz ..

I see only two choices:

-initial double

-pass and pass

me too.

I don't feel strongly about the first round. I've seen doubles on this sort of hand work very well, and I've seen them work very badly. I haven't seen enough to decide if it's winning bridge or not.

1NT on the first round is horrible.
