slothy
some songs echo in our consciousness because they have a melody that we cant shrug off. Some songs inspire us coz of their lyrics and even though the melody (or voice) is forgettable the lyrics themselves outshine the 'song'. So the lyrics of which song have made you say 'wowwwwww'? For me it was listening to Bob Dylan's 'Every Grain of Sand'. It was the second time around when i really listened to the lyrics that i realised that this was an amazing song, lyrically-speaking In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere, Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair. Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake, Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break. In the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand. Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear, Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer. The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay. I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame And every time I pass that way I always hear my name. Then onward in my journey I come to understand That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand. I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light, In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space, In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face. I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me. I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand. would be nice if maybe you include a link or lyrics themselves so rest of us can judge The Lyrics
keylime
For me, this song has such tremendous meaning for me that it will be a permanent fixture of my life. It constantly reminds me that not anyone by myself am responsible for my actions, and that freedom is a price worth being paid. Redemption Song by Bob Marley Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;None but ourselves can free our minds.Have no fear for atomic energy, cause none of them can stop the time. How long shall they kill our prophets,While we stand aside and look? ooh! Some say its just a part of it:Weve got to fulfil de book. Wont you help to singThese songs of freedom? -cause all I ever have:Redemption songs;Redemption songs;Redemption songs.

kfay
There's something in the way she movesOr looks my way, or calls my nameThat seems to leave this troubled world behindAnd if I'm feeling down and blueOr troubled by some foolish gameShe always seems to make me change my mind And I feel fine any time she's around me nowShe's around me now almost all the timeAnd if I'm well you can tell that she's been with me nowShe's been with me now quite a long, long timeAnd I feel fine... kenrexford
There's a port on a western bayAnd it serves a hundred ships a dayLonely sailors pass the time awayAnd talk about their homes And there's a girl in this harbor townAnd she works layin' whiskey downThey say "Brandy, fetch another round"She serves them whiskey and wine The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)"Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit) Brandy wears a braided chainMade of finest silver from the North of SpainA locket that bears the nameOf the man that Brandy loves He came on a summer's dayBringin' gifts from far awayBut he made it clear he couldn't stayNo harbor was his home The sailor said " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)"But my life, my love and my lady is the sea"(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit) Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyesWhen he told his sailor storiesShe could feel the ocean fall and riseShe saw its ragin' gloryBut he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest manAnd Brandy does her best to understand(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit) At night when the bars close downBrandy walks through a silent townAnd loves a man who's not aroundShe still can hear him sayShe hears him say "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)"But my life, my love and my lady is the sea"(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit) "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)"But my life, my love and my lady is the sea" (dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda) Nothing profound. Foxx
There's a lady who's sureAll that glitters is goldAnd she's buying a stairway to heavenWhen she gets there she knowsIf the stores are all closedWith a word she can get what she came forOoh-ooh-ooh, ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven There's a sign on the wallBut she wants to be sure'Cause you know sometimes words have two meaningsIn a tree by the brookThere's a songbird who singsSometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven Ooh, it makes me wonderOoh, it makes me wonder There's a feeling I getWhen I look to the westAnd my spirit is crying for leavingIn my thoughts I have seenRings of smoke through the treesAnd the voices of those who stand looking Ooh, it makes me wonderOoh, it really makes me wonder And it's whispered that soonIf we all call the tuneThen the piper will lead us to reasonAnd a new day will dawnFor those who stand longAnd the forests will echo with laughter Ohh-ooh ohh-ooh ohh-ooh ohh-ooh ohh hoh If there's a bustle in your hedgerowDon't be alarmed nowIt's just a spring clean for the May-QueenYes, there are two paths you can go byBut in the long runThere's still time to change the road you're on And it makes me wonderAhhh, hoh-hoh Your head is humming and it won't goIn case you don't knowThe piper's calling you to join himDear lady, can you hear the wind blowAnd did you knowYour stairway lies on the whispering wind ( ( ( Guitar Solo ) ) ) And as we wind on down the roadOur shadows taller than our soulThere walks a lady we all knowWho shines white light and wants to showHow ev'rything still turns to goldAnd if you listen very hardThe tune will come to you at lastWhen all are one and one is all, yeah-ee-yeahTo be a rock and not to roll And she's buying a stairway to heaven
bid_em_up
Oh please, nothing beats the full lyrics to "Blinded By The Light". B) Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomatIn the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hatWith a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-roundWith this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the groundSome all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot snappin' his fingers clappin' his handsAnd some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her handAnd now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sandAnd some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band And she was blinded by the lightCut loose like a deuce another runner in the nightBlinded by the lightShe got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright Some brimstone baritone anti-cyclone rolling stone preacher from the eastHe says: "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least"And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone watchin' the young girls danceAnd some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance Yeah he was blinded by the lightCut loose like a deuce another runner in the nightBlinded by the lightHe got down but she never got tight, but he's gonna make it tonight Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takesShe said I'll turn you on sonny, to something strong if you play that song with the funky break,And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outsideAnd little Early-Pearly came in by her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride, Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer playin' backyard bombardierYes and Scotland Yard was trying hard, they sent a dude with a calling card,he said, do what you like, but don't do it hereWell I jumped up, turnedaround, spit in the air, fell on the groundAsked him which was the way back homeHe said take a right at the light, keep goin' straight until night, and then boy, you're on your own And now in Zanzibar a shootin' star was ridin' in a side car hummin' a lunar tuneYes, and the avatar said blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon And some kidnapped handicap was complainin' that he caught the clap from some mousetrap he bought last night, Well I unsnapped his skull cap and between his ears I sawa gap but figured he'd be all right He was just blinded by the lightCut loose like a deuce another runner in the nightBlinded by the lightMama always told me not to look into the sights of the sunOh but mama that's where the fun is

Mr. Dodgy
If Monty Python is allowed, I'd pick 'The Galaxy Song': Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolvingAnd revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,A sun that is the source of all our power. The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can seeAre moving at a million miles a dayIn an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars. It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide. We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point. We go 'round every two hundred million years,And our galaxy is only one of millions of billionsIn this amazing and expanding universe. The universe itself keeps on expanding and expandingIn all of the directions it can whizzAs fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,How amazingly unlikely is your birth,And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth. (The last two lines seem somehow particularly appropriate to many pickup partners on BBO) I don't think I can really come up with anything quite as deep and meaningful as slothy's original post, however. There are many songs with great lyrics that have affected me for different reasons at different times in my life, even just listing the artists would be a difficult task. Top 3 would probably be Freddy Mercury, Roy Orbison, and Bono.

nige1
I like "Greensleeves", Gilbert (of Gilbert & Sullivan), Flanders (of Flanders & Swan), T S Elliot ("Old Possum's book of practical Cats)", Tom Lehrer ... And then there's ... When I was a young man I carried me packAnd I lived the free life of the roverFrom the Murray's green basin to the dusty outbackI waltzed my Matilda all overThen in 1915 my country said: Son,It's time to stop rambling, there's work to be doneSo they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gunAnd they sent me away to the war And the band played Waltzing MatildaWhen the ship pulled away from the quayAnd amid all the tears, flag waving and cheersWe sailed off for Gallipoli How well I remember that terrible dayWhen our blood stained the sand and the waterAnd how in that hell they call Suvla BayWe were butchered like lambs at the slaughterJohnny Turk, he was ready, he primed himself wellHe rained us with bullets, and he showered us with shellAnd in five minutes flat, we were all blown to hellHe nearly blew us back home to Australia And the band played Waltzing MatildaWhen we stopped to bury our slainWell we buried ours and the Turks buried theirsThen it started all over again Oh those that were living just tried to surviveIn that mad world of blood, death and fireAnd for ten weary weeks I kept myself aliveWhile around me the corpses piled higherThen a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over headAnd when I awoke in me hospital bedAnd saw what it had done, I wished I was deadI never knew there was worse things than dying Oh no more I'll go Waltzing MatildaAll around the green bush far and nearFor to hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legsNo more waltzing Matilda for me They collected the wounded, the crippled, the maimedAnd they shipped us back home to AustraliaThe armless, the legless, the blind and the insaneThose proud wounded heroes of SuvlaAnd when the ship pulled into Circular QuayI looked at the place where me legs used to beAnd thank Christ there was no one there waiting for meTo grieve and to mourn and to pity And the Band played Waltzing MatildaWhen they carried us down the gangwayOh nobody cheered, they just stood there and staredThen they turned all their faces away Now every April I sit on my porchAnd I watch the parade pass before meI see my old comrades, how proudly they marchRenewing their dreams of past gloriesI see the old men all tired, stiff and wornThose weary old heroes of a forgotten warAnd the young people ask "What are they marching for?"And I ask myself the same question And the band plays Waltzing MatildaAnd the old men still answer the callBut year after year, their numbers get fewerSomeday, no one will march there at all Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing MatildaWho'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabongSo who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me? nige1
Another cheery song ... Rows and flows of angel's hairAnd icecream castles in the airAnd feathered canyons everywhereI've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sunThey rain and they snow on everyoneSo many things I would have doneBut clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides nowFrom up and down, but still somehowIt's cloud illusions I recallI really don't know clouds at all. Moon and Junes and Ferris wheelsThat dizzy dancing way you feelAs every fairy tale comes realI've looked at love that way. But now it's just another showYou leave them laughing when you goAnd if you care, don't let them knowDon't give yourself away. I've looked at love from both sides nowFrom give and take, but still somehowIt's love's illusions I recallI really don't know love at all. Tears and fears and feeling proudTo say "I love you" right out loudDreams and schemes and circus crowdsI've looked at life that way But now old friends are acting strangeThey shake their heads, they say I've changedWell something's lost, but something's gainedIn living every day. I've looked at life from both sides nowFrom win and lose, but still somehowIt's life's illusions I recallI really don't know life at all. matmat
Into the distance, a ribbon of blackStretched to the point of no turning backA flight of fancy on a windswept fieldStanding alone my senses reeledA fatal attraction holding me fast, howCan I escape this irresistible grasp? Can't keep my mind from the circling skiesTongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, IIce is forming on the tips of my wingsUnheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everythingNo navigator to find my way homeUnladened, empty and turned to stoneA soul in tension that's learning to flyCondition grounded but determined to tryCan't keep my mind from the circling skiesTongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, IAbove the planet on a wing and a prayer,My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,Across the clouds I see my shadow flyOut of the corner of my watering eyeA dream unthreatened by the morning lightCould blow this soul right through the roof of the nightThere's no sensation to compare with thisSuspended animation, A state of blissCan't keep my mind from the circling skiesTongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
