kenrexford
Another version that has been suggested (AKx xx KQx AK542) is still not a 2NT opener for me. I play 2NT as 20-a bad 22 and almost never upgrade 19-counts. Certainly not this one. With this hand as a starting piont It has to look more like AKxxxAxxAKJ109 before I'll upgrade (and to be honest, even though I'd open that hand 2NT to help getting to slam, if 1C ends the auction you are very unlikely to have missed game) That example seems pretty close to being too good for a 20-21 2NT opening. AKx xx KQx AKxxx I can't believe calling this a 19 count... 100% agreement with all of this. One aside, though. I notice that you describe KQx in diamonds. I think I'm going mad, because I keep seeing an "x" pop in and pop out of this hand in diamonds.

I think I'm going mad, because I keep seeing an "x" pop in and pop out of this hand in diamonds. I was quoting an example hand Frances came up with, similar to the actual hand. The hand under discussion in the problem had KQ doubleton of diamonds the whole time!
han
I agree with everybody that the hand with KQ tight is not an upgrade but AKx xx KQx AKxxx is a reasonable upgrade. But then, I play 2NT as 20-21 and partner knows I like to upgrade nice 19-counts.
finally17
Ok then, for all of you fans of upgrading, my next question is: What's the minimum with which you'll respond to a 2N opening, given yourself as a partner. Not just transfering and hoping to stop in 3M, but actually planning on ending in game of some type. Specifying situation ("IMPS red, I'll squeak out a bid" or what have you) would be nice. I have passed with a lot of hands where the field knee-jerks to 3NT, for +120 or a lesser minus score. What those hands are is a difficult thing to describe. But, generally, the possession of a King is not enough to bid.
