Bid this one

2N has been standard on this hand for at least 20 years.

Similar hands have been in MSC and it's interesting to see how view change in different eras. If this problem was presented pre-1990, you'd get a handful of votes for 3 and some weird votes for 2 when reversing into a short suit was in vogue.

You'd get plenty of players upgrading this hand to a 2N opening too.

Was there really a day when reversing into Txx was acceptable? That seems like it's asking for a world of trouble. Not here, because a partner who goes wild about hearts had five spades you can insist on...but on other hands...

I hate 2N upgrades.

For the heck of it, I can't imagine any other rebid than 2N either.

Yeah or even the KQ dub. Anything but 2N or a 3 card jump raise.

It was as it is now (3325) the first time I read it. It makes me surprised so many people are upgrading.

Anyone care to make a case, here or in general? Maybe my problem is the kind of things people will respond to 2N on, even not simply transferring but offering 3N (I see quacky 5332 4 counts get transferred and rebid 3N all the time opposite 2N openers).

5th card on a good suit (KQxxx+) counts as 1 hcp. Thus the hand is worth 20 hcp and a 2NT opener.

The had as currently shown - AKx xxx KQ AK542 is nowhere near a 2NT opener.

Another version that has been suggested (AKx xx KQx AK542) is still not a 2NT opener for me.

I play 2NT as 20-a bad 22 and almost never upgrade 19-counts. Certainly not this one. With this hand as a starting piont It has to look more like

AKx

xx

Axx

AKJ109

before I'll upgrade (and to be honest, even though I'd open that hand 2NT to help getting to slam, if 1C ends the auction you are very unlikely to have missed game)

Well, with KQ-tight in diamonds, I can live with 1♣...2NT. If the pips were better, something like A98-109x-KQ-AK98x, I'd absolutely open 2NT.

No position either way is clearly right or wrong, so long as partner knows the parameters, IMO.

That example seems pretty close to being too good for a 20-21 2NT opening.

AKx xx KQx AKxxx I can't believe calling this a 19 count...

Easy 1C opening. I see no reason to upgrade this to 2Nt

Ill bid 2D followed by 2/3S with an experienced partner otherwise ill bid 2Nt. A tactical 2H reverse is also a nice bid against weakers players but again an experienced partner is needed.

1C---1S----2D----2S

3S

1C---1S-----2H----3H

3S

1C---1S-----2D----3D

3S

These are sequence to show a 3crd raise and more often then not the 2nd is a fragment not a real suit.
