I have not scheduled the sessions yet, however, I want to receive some input from some BIL members on what carding methods they are interested in, or some interesting defensive problems (appropriate to BIL level, naturally) that they have encountered. inquiry Posted February 29, 2004 Report Share Posted February 29, 2004 Hi Robert, Welcome to the Bridge Base Forums. Your point about signalling helping declarer is a good one. There are times you can lie without harm to parnter, because perhaps he knows you have no hcp from the bidding and his own hand, or because declarer will show out so you can lie about the count. Also, there is an art in lying not to declearer but to partner. For example parnter leads low through dummy's AJT and you have you have KQxx. Some times you might win the king to make declearer "think" your partner has the Queen. Ok, there might be some logic in this falsecard. But there are other times when you might despirately prefer partner to lead some other suit when he gets in instead of this one again. In that case, you play the KING, not to fool declearer, but to "fool" partner into deciding continuing this suit is not a good idea. Then he maybe able to work out the switch you need. Certainly there are times to not give an accurate signal, and times where you can give a FALSE signal. However, I've decided (right or wrong) that this is beyond the scope of the class; at least at the outset. To me its more important to focus on what TYPE of signals are used in different situations (is it attitude, count or suit preference?). The class will also shed some light on what card to play in certain sitations as well (splitting honors, playing what honors from 3rd hand, leading suits back, etc..), so there will be lots to talk about! As the class develops, and I get a better feel for the skill level of the participants, I'll see if its appropriate for to conceal signals. Another related topic that I would spend a little time on is interpreting defender's signals from declarer's point of view. I'm finished with my first lesson plan (which will probably last at least two sessions), and I'm scheduling a time with Maureen. Watch the Club News for the announced time. sceptic Posted March 5, 2004 Report Share Posted March 5, 2004 Hi Phil, I would be very interested, I try (and that is the operative word) to play standard count and attitude and standard discards, though from what I have read and tried I quite like Lavinthal discards which seem a lot better to me, some recommend play it only against NT (I have no idea why) as it appears to be a sensible approach to trump contracts as well, though I guess there will be debate about that.
