Over 4D

I would have bid 4 over 4, although it is an underbid. Double leaves you poorly placed later.

If you bid 4 and partner bids 4 of a major, you can play in his major (I would raise as a general slam try). But if you double first you have no clue where to play the hand.

Good question!

I like the 6NT punt: it seems as good as anything at this point.

Check out the thread 'Robson/Segal advice' in the General Discussion area for a related discussion about 4 vs double.

I confess I would probably have doubled at the table. I suspect 4 would have been a better choice.

Easy double the second time. These votes for 4 the first time are shocking, the hand is both too strong and too good for any other strain.

doh, we bid 4 because we know RHO is gonna bid 5 no matter what. If I didn't know that, I'd probably bid 5 over 4.. lol.

That's why I think these 2-in-1 or 2-part problems don't make much sense: we end up making a 1st bid based on info we weren't supposed to have until 2nd round.

Let's say you Double.  Partner bids 4 and RHO bids 5.  Now what?

6N now is just silly, you might as well have bid 6N last round. I would have overcalled 4NT (natural) over 4C.

Frances' suggestion seems best although I suspect that I would overlook that possibility, at the table. IMO

  • Over 4; 4N = 10, _X = 7, 5 = 4, 4 = 3.
  • Over 5; _X = 10, 5 = 5, 5 = 1.

I doubled then doubled again, which was passed out.

How do you defend when you lead the K and dummy comes down:

[hv=w=sa10xxh987xxxdjxcx&s=skjxhkjdakqxxxcaq]266|200|[/hv]

and partner encourages with the 3?

Edit: sorry realized this will lead everyone astray. Let's pretend partner discouraged...
