P_Marlowe
#1 It never hurts to ask. The standard meaning of the XX is power, denying a fit and a suggestion to go for blood, so you have to take out the the double by your partner, if you are weak and if you have a preference, ... in the actual case you have a 4 card spade suit. It is a matter of partner of partnership agreement, if pass shows no preference at all, or is a suggestion to play, ... sometimes the XX is a psych. Another possible meaning of the XX is some kind of transfer. #2 You have fit, you should show the fit. A fairly normal way of doing this would be via 3C, but some play jumps in a suit as fit showing, so 3D would certainly be ok as well. Bidding a forcing 2S is not bad as well, but if you want to show a suit, I would suggest, that you show diamonds. With kind regardsMarlowe
the hog
First board. Your pd has made a takeout x and you have 4S. Bid 1S! Second board. 2S if you play this as forcing. 3C otherwise.
helene_t
First one: The redbl probably shows 9+ points with no biddable suit. If you pass, it asks partner to choose. If you then overrule partner's choice, you're showing a good hand - in this situation, a pass may be stronger than a bid! So therefore your should bid 1♠ immediately. Second one: bid 2♠, this is forcing in standard methods. If you play 2♠ as non-forcing, bid 3♣, which shows a generic gameforce. (If you play 2♠ as forcing, 3♣ would show heart support. Incidentally you do have heart support but you'd rather have four heart for that bid).
whereagles
Board 1: first of all, as others have said, the auction shows clearly that you're broke, so if you bid now, pard won't take it as some sort of strong bid, but rather as a mere preference. As for what to bid, there are two schools on this. School 1 (Europe mainly) says you only pass with a club stack with good intermediates, i.e. QJTxxxx or better. If you don't have that, you pick a 3 card suit and hope for the best. School 2 (US mainly) say that pass means "I'm broke and have no preference. You pick a suit." Regardless of the trend at your location, you have a clear 1♠ bid. Board 2: this is actually more complicated than it seems. There are a lot of good bids available, but, if you want to avoid complications, just try a 3♣ cue followed by 4♥ or a direct 4♣ cue (splinter). The one thing I advise against is doubling... ArtK78
Actions over redoubles at the one-level are: Pass - nothing to say (NOT FOR PENALTIES). Bid - the same bid that you would have made had there been no redouble, except that you are not forced to bid now. The bid shows no values, since everyone else has shown values. Jump - preemptive - long suit, no values. Every so often you will have a 7 or 8 count on this type of auction (everyone opens and doubles light). Some partnerships have agreements to handle these hands (unlike backgammon, one is not allowed to turn the cube to 8), but I don't see the need for them. Just make your normal bid. By the way, in my partnerships if the bidding starts with a preempt and it goes double-redouble, pass is FOR PENALTIES. One should not allow the opponent's redouble (which could be a psyche) to change the meaning of your action after the double of a preemptive opening bid. On the second hand, my first thought was to bid 2♦, intending to bid out your hand. Diamonds, then spades then hearts. Your diamonds are far better than your spades, and you have no intention of playing in spades anyway (unless partner introduces the suit voluntarily). I am not fond of making fit showing jumps with three card support. I also don't like the cue-bid. You have so much to say with this hand, why waste an entire level of bidding with a meaningless call and give the opponents free reign? Guest Jlall
I really think 2S is a bad bid on the second one. If you want to bid a suit it seems clear to bid 2D on KQxxx rather than 2S on Axxxx. Shortness in spades is good, Qx(x) of spades is bad, etc. For slam purposes 2D must be a better bid. I would bid 3C though because I'm worried about LHO preempting high in clubs and me not having shown a fit yet.
jdonn
I agree per not liking 2♠ at all, and bidding 3♣.
dicklont
1. 1♠2. On my own I would probably have bid 2♠ but I agree with JLall that 2♦ is better because it has more potention as a source of tricks. I don't like 3♣ because i have 3 hearts, not 4. I will show heart support later. Partners most likely rebid is 2H or 2NT, my second bid will then be 3Cl. I'm not sure where it ends. When partner rebids 2Sp or 3D I cuebid clubs as well and we won´t stop under 6.
