World Junior Pairs in Frankfurt

The next World Junior Pair Championships will be in Frankfurt, Germany, so mark July 10th - 13th in your calendar!

I will be there but unfortunately no longer playing as a junior. Maybe some people from the forum will be there too :)

Hi Gerben,

what is your source? I was convinced the date would be one week earlier... But maybe I'm wrong...

As I know, it is planned to make a Junior Camp afterwards, but I'm not sure if they will do now or not.

Sincerely Yours,

Felix Zimmermann.

I think there wille be no Junior Pairs in Frankfurt this year

the WBF page says, that thee will be a junior event in Beijing and that the next regular junior-pairs event will be in 2009 and every odd year

The Youth cycle will be run on a four-year cycle also, starting in 2008 with the World Mind Sports Games (see above). Then:

In the odd-numbered years, beginning in 2009, the World Youth Championships will be held, for players under 26 (and under 21 if enough players to divide the field) comprising:

  World Youth Teams

  World Youth Pairs

  World Youth Individual

All these events will be transnational.

In the even-numbered years the World Youth Team Championships will be held, comprising:

World Under 26 Teams (Ortiz-Patiño Trophy)

World Under 21 Teams (Damiani Cup)

In 2008 the World Junior Team Championship (for the Ortiz-Patiño Trophy for under 26) and the World Schools Team Championship (for the Damiani Cup for under 21) will be held concurrently with the World Mind Sports Games (for under 28, in 2008 only). As teams are knocked out of these two events, they may join the WMSG Youth Teams and as teams are eliminated from the WMSG Youth Teams, they will be eligible to join the WMSG Youth Pairs, then the WMSG Individual. Details are still being worked on.

After 2008, all World Youth Championships will revert back to the summer timeframe.

That's true. The only opputunity is to be European Pairs Championship, but it's not decided yet.

Hartmut Kondoch, organisator of the Junior World Championship in Frankfurt, wrote the Junior World Championships will probably (he explained it as "almost sure") taking place from 10th of July till 13th of July and he's interested in organizing a Camp afterwards, but that's not for sure. Neither the WBF nor the EBL are interested in it but it is possible if it is organised by germany. But the Camp can only take place if there are at least 150 Juniors/Schools players who are interested in it.

So please do me the favour and if you are interested in it, write me please a privat message or message me in BBO (my nickname is 400 Volt). So we can see if there exits some interest or not enough.

Of course, your message is not binding.

Sincerely Yours,

Felix Zimmermann.

Two weeks are gone, nobody answers.

Is there any (official) news?

Yeah. Rumors and hopes and perhaps nothing more(?).

The most serious is of course the status of the event is diminishing with every day.

A REAL World Mastership is announced in good time. The exact place - may come later, but not the event as such.

As it is, it is easy to get the feeling it is simply another one junior tournament.

Not to mention, as no safe facts are given, federations and players are making another planning. Feks as I understand it, Norvegian federation is going to have an international junior camp at the same time. Sweden seems not planning for this at all.

It would perhaps be better to let this be this year, let C. Rimstedt and S. Sivelind regain their crowns one extra period - contend with a traditional junior tournament + camp for those who wish, if possible - and go all out for a REAL championship next time, in good time, at acknowledged place and well organized. Where Rimstedt + partner are welcomed as defending champs.

Kind of unfortunate that this conflicts with the US summer nationals and junior team trials. I would love to play in this event, but I will play in the team trials if I have to choose.

Perhaps it isnt so bad as it sounds, as it seems it isnt no World pairs but European Pairs.

The swedish delegate Melander did said so earlier, it seems he has right.

What happens with World Pairs I dunno.

The swedish delegate Micke Melander rewrites and tells today on the swedish junior-forum:

EUROPEAN JUNIOR PAIRS – WROCLAW - POLAND

Monday 14th July– Opening

Tuesday 15th – Qualifications

Wednesday 16th – Semi-finals

Thursday 17th – Finals and closing

The categories will be:

Under 26 Open

Under 26 Girls (if we have at least 40/50 pairs)

Under 21

Entry fee150 €/pair

Translation:

Tournamnts are open for all who wish to participate. I know there will be arranged also really cheap living-possibilities with all meals. The travels will cost of course.

More information will come.

Greetings

M.

So what does the future hold?

Based mainly on what Jose Damiani said at the press conference at the

World Championships in Shanghai, and a few subsequent conversations,

I think the intention is for something like this to happen ...

Probable WBF events have the month in capital letters.

March 2008: White House Junior Teams - 24 teams from 18 countries, on BBO's vugraph this week. An annual Dutch event for all countries to enter.

July 2008: Youth NABC in Atlanta Georgia, all countries welcome, should have a large attendance mainly in the 10-15 age range, age limit under 20 I think,

http://www.youthnabc.org/

July 2008: in Sweden, European Youth Pairs, ref this thread

September 2008 in Lodz Poland: World University Teams Championships (U28), ref other websites

OCTOBER 2008 in Beijing: three major Teams Championships, followed by Pairs and Individual events. To play in the Pairs and/or Individual, you have to be in one of the Teams events. Ref WBF website. A WBF event. Massive subsidies available in order to send teams, especially for smaller countries.

January 2009: The 41st annual Australian Youth Bridge Week has been about 15 tables. There are some thoughts of trying to expand the event to attract more overseas players in future years.

March 2009: White House Junior Teams in Amsterdam, Netherlands

mid 2009: 2nd Youth NABC in Washington DC, USA

JULY or AUGUST 2009: World Junior Pairs, transnational, held in a cost effective manner, might or might not have other youth events with it.

mid 2009: If there is a demand for youth bridge camps, the WBF hopes that individual countries willr un them, I think, rtaher than the WBF running them.

MID 2010: World Youth Teams Championships continue every two years, perhaps held in Russia alongside the Open Pairs and Rosenblum Teams.

MID 2011 World Junior Pairs, transnational, continues every 2nd year.

2012: While the intention 1s for the Under 28 event in 2008 to succeed and grow into a truly major four yearly shining light of youth bridge held as part of the Mind Sport Games every four years, the other two World Championships would probably move back to their normal timing in July or August, not necessarily as a separate stand-alone event.

I think the stated intention was to try to have one WBF youth bridge event held every year, with the events conducted in a cost effective manner, so they might be held alongside Open events for economies of scale.

I might be mistaken, but I think it is worth publicising these rough concepts.

I repeat - none of this is official - but I have a feeling that most of it will be very close to what ends up happening.

Peter Gill

speaking in a private capacity, not in any official capacity.

World Pairs will be played in Beijing.

Isnt it supposed to be U28 in Beijing??

We are supposed to talk about the junior-title, ie -26.

Or is this year 2008 U28 to substitute for the usual -26 this year? Not entirely fair, but what to do...

I tried setting up a camp in the UK last year. I had everything organised, but no-one bothered to sign up. The official organisations didn't bother to advertise anything, nor to reply to my requests that they did. In the end I had to cancel and lost a large amount of my own money on the venture.
