This only really loses if we end up playing 3♦ and the field is in a superior heart partial our way. I don't think this is likely.

The lead-directing benefits of 3♦ are what sways me to the call... although I may be guilty of succumbing to the 'wire' of knowing that the opps are bidding on. If we belong at the 5-level, it is probably in diamonds, not hearts.. or it makes no difference and at imps 400 or 450 is largely irrelevant on this type of hand.

Easier to bid 3♦ since we know the follow-up. If we aren't told LHO is gonna bid 4♠ regardless, there might be a point in bidding 3♥ over 2♠, followed by 4♦ over opps evental 3♠.

They didn't find their ruff so we scored -500, 4♠ should be made, but you never know, sponsor scored -140 at the other table.

 

 

Given that partner has spade wastage, no possible heart finese and club wastage and we are still only -500 vs 'makeable' game, it makes me think bidding on is a good idea.

I would have bid 3H then pass. 3H because I´m hoping to be raised to 4H, and it shows my values as well as gets hearts into play. 3D could just lose hearts and this is not what a double looks like to me.
