kenrexford
A funny hand from SF. I held ♠Q9xx ♥J109 ♦Qxxx ♣Ax, all vulnerable. RHO opened 1♦, I passed. LHO responded 1♥, partner passed. RHO bid 1♠, and I grabbed 1NT. Partner alerted this as "Grabbit." She thought that "Grabbit" was a convention like "Stayman" or "Transfer" and, thus, well-known. LOL. She then explained to LHO what "Grabbit" meant. ("Grab" 1NT.) Not the best example of the use of the bid, but it makes for the story. LHO sawed me off with a double, passed to me. -200 sucks at MP, so I redoubled, just in case partner could run somewhere. She took the redouble as "We are in trouble; you play it" and declined with a "You play your own stupid contract" pass. The lead of a high spade pip induced partner to lay down ♠10xx ♥Kxx ♦Axx ♣Qxxx. A nice collection, to which I was not entitled. My muttering about her ridiculous use of the pass convention ceased immediately, as I now had options. It sure looks cold, eh? In fact, it was. Two spades, two hearts, and a squeeze on LHO (on the run of the spades) left LHO with all clubs and diamonds in the end position. As RHO showed up with AKJ in spades and A in hearts, LHO needed the rest to make this double. As simple as covering any diamond from RHO (to ensure that LHO was stuck in) yielded the 7th trick (club Queen). I'm sure there was a wall of +760's our way...
