Defence after Wilkosz 2d

Recommended Posts

Hi,

First this is certainly not a B/I theme.

Second, I would suggest, that you play the

same defence as against Multi.

May not be perfect, but ...

We play

X = bal. 12-14 or +18

direct suit overcalls are limited to 15

delayed overcalls after pass are 15-17

2NT is nat. 15-17, no stopper for a specific

suit needed (this is of course different to

2D multi, a direct 2NT promises stoppers

in both mayors)

If partner overcalls in a mayor, treat the other

mayor as their suit.

If I remember it correct Wikosz 2D promises

a 2-suiter with at least one mayor.

I have encountered Wilkosz 2D only once,

so I cant really say the above suggestion

will work, but ...

With kind regards

Marlowe

I usually play something like...

X= takeout, including both minors and hands with over 17 hcp

2M= natural and constrstuctive but not forcing (up to about 18 hcp)

2NT= 15-17 hcp balanced

3m= Natural and up to about 15 hcp

Pass then....

X= Penalty oriented, always with a 'runout' suit. For example, after 2-P-2-P-P, I X with...

x

KJTx

AJTxx

ATx

Switching around any of the suits besides hearts. Partner can leave it in, or run with a total bust.

Pass then 2NT over 2 or 2 over 2 is a 4 cards in the other major and usually 11-14 hcp.

This has the advantage of being natural, and using pass-then-X as penalty.

Dunno who else uses it, can't even remember where I learned it.

How about: double = takeout of diamonds (includes monster hands), pass then double = takeout of the last bid suit, the rest natural? It may not be optimal, but looks pretty straightforward. And after all, you need some expectance of a fit to want to compete (or tons of high cards to play game on strength).

As a side note, probably you should err on the side of caution, even if you play quite aggresively otherwise. Wilkosz is a 55 two-suiter, so foul distributions are very much alike ...

P.S. Whether forementioned takeout doubles might or might not contain (un)equal level conversion type hands is worth a discussion of itself. But this is the beginner/intermediate thread after all ...

I suggest this theme to be moved to non-natural systems or something.

Whatever the defense you apply, let me say that it is usually not a good idea to look for 4 - 4 fits after this opening bid. Rather be conservative about your suit contracts and try for 3NT a lot.
