what to bid?

I see these possibilities:

1. If you play lebensohl and slow shows, bid 3 NT. This shows a hand with enough stuff for 3 NT but no stopper.

2. If you don´t play lebensohl, try 3 and hope that this asks for a stopper.

3. If you have no other bid, try 3 NT and pray.

4. There is no 4. choice.

Umm.... I see two possibilities:

i) If you play double as take-out, double

ii) Otherwise, bid 3C natural and forcing.

What she said. Regarding i), if your negative double promises four spades, use option ii). For me a negative double just shows cards, a hand that has values for a raise to at least 2NT.

An option iii) is 2NT as showing clubs (Rubensohl or Rumpelsohl) followed by 3 as stopper asking.

The trouble with ii) and iii) is that you can't penalise 2 if that is what partner thinks is best. Could well be at this vulnerability and that is why a double would be my first choice.

If you can ask for a stopper, do it. Otherwise just bid 3NT.

I wouldn't take-out double or show the ♣ suit. I'd just ask for a stopper in whatever methods you use

I really don't get this.

You are a passed hand, so partner will never get too exited and think you are looking for slam.

What is the downside from showing the club suit?

- they might not lead a club from, say, a 2614 hand. To me that risk is so small as to be ignorable

- your LHO is able to bid hearts at the 3-level. yes, that's a risk - but if LHO has a heart raise, isn't it quite likely we don't want to play in 3NT anyway? The biggest risk is that they find a save in 4H, but with us at favourable that's less of an issue.

What is the benefit of showing the club suit?

- You get to play in a contract other than 3NT. Perhaps partner has AQJx Qx Axx Qxx. Or Ax Axx KQ9xxx Qx. Or (if possible for your methods) QJ10xx Axx AKx Jx. And if partner has a double heart stop, he's perfectly allowed to bid 3NT.
