You are South and open the bidding in 3rd seat with a 15-17 1NT (see your nice hand below). The auction progresses quickly and naturally. Partner had 2NT Lebensohl available, so their natural 3 call is game forcing.

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=satha98xdaqxxck9x]133|100|Scoring: IMP

P-(P)-1N-(2)

3-(3)-4-(4)

P-(P)-?[/hv]

When the opponents take the favorable 4 sacrifice(?) over your game, what's your call?

Feel free to comment on what sorts of hands partner might have for their bidding, and which of them would double 4 in direct seat (especially given their likely spade shortness on the auction).

This is no forcing pass situation for me, but I would never pass and I think the bidding so far was fine. So the choice is between pass and 5 HEart.

My pd passed in 1. seat but had enough for a game forcing 3 Heart bid, so it must be a good five card suit, no 6 carder. So we have 9 HEarts between us, I have per definition of my 1 NT bid a balanced hand and I can see no double fit. I would always double.

I had liked to make a forcing pass here, but ... :)

I'm pretty sure pass is forcing in the agreements that I usually play, and I would certainly bid 5h. Sounds like partner has a side suit, and we're happy whichever minor it is. Even slam might be possible if he has a real two-suiter (imagine xx KQxxx Kxxxx x or xx Kxxxx x AQxxx (admittedly not cold)).

I think I would have bid 4c or 4d (surely a cue for hearts) at the previous turn.

5. Partner's pass asked for our involvement and we can't be much more suitable than this for play at the 5-level.

I might have bid 4 the previous round.

The hand is arguably too good for a 15-17 NT, but in third seat I don't mind too much.

I would not have bid 4H over 3S, it's far too good a hand. I would bid 4D, showing a diamond suit and heart support (with the opponents bidding spades, just envisage x KQxxx Kxxx Qxx opposite where 6D is pretty huge). I would rather be 3442 than 2443 but that's all that's wrong with the hand.

Having bid 4H, I wouldn't dream of doubling now, I expect to make at the 5-level. I agree with 4NT as long as you are happy partner will understand it.

I would have opened 1, or 1 if 1 promises unbalanced, the first time, planning a 2NT rebid. This hand is too strong for 1NT, IMO.

However, if I did open 1NT, I would have cue'd the first time as a super-acceptance. I have a primed-out monster with a well-placed distributional value.

If I boxed myself in twice, I'd cue at the five-level and hope that partner understood that I was a two-time pansy.

Oh come on, you were a pansy twice but now all of the sudden, you've grown balls enough to invite six?

What partner in their right mind would believe this?

At best this would be construed as playing 5H, making a lead directional bid on the way, for when/if the opponents bid 5S.
