pclayton
I don't have strong feelings about these kinds of hands, but my style is to open something very high like 5 or 6 and let the chips fall where they may. With a solid 8 bagger at these colors I'm more inclined to open 5, so with an 8-5, I think I'll open 6. The one thing I won't do is pass, but I know many that would. neilkaz
An 8 card suit is trumps and 5♦ puts the opps under lots of pressure and often makes. My close 2nd choice is 6♦ which sometimes make and which probably gets doubled.
Echognome
Put me down for 6 as well. Partner will never raise this as I hold all the top diamond honors. But no way I'm letting opponents guess any lower than this.

dburn
Don't mind opening one. As to those who would open six, my view was well expressed (in a different context) by Bobby Wolff, who said "I admire them - I just don't want their results." Not sure how to take that quote, but it certainly sounds like you think there's a "right" way to bid an 8-5. I long stopped presuming I knew what's the best way to bid with freaks. I certainly believe that 1♦ could work out being the right bid as could pass, or 5♦ or 6. I'm just taking my "guess" with 6 on this hand. However, I don't want their opponents' results either.
Guest Jlall
There is a good chance of buying it in 5 doubled by opening 5, the opps don't bid 5M/6M that much over it. Plus partner may just have enough stuff in the majors to stop them from making 5M/6M anyways. Of course this may miss a slam.
han
I'd open 1D in first seat, I think. Or 5D.

The other auctions were amazing: 2NT*(minors)-X-p-p-p(!!!) "I thought I might take 8 diamond tricks" (no, really, he really said that) -6 for 1400 and 100%! 1♦-X-2♠-p3♣-4♥-X(!!!)-XX5♦-5♥*-X-p6♣-X-p-pp(!!!) "I have better clubs than diamonds" Double dummy defense can take 11 tricks in clubs, but they only took 8 for -1700. Yes, I could have mentioned the exact circumstances (ie bidding judgment of other players in the club), but I was more interested in the Absolute Correct bid (which of course doesn't exist, but still). Cascade
The other auctions were amazing: 2NT*(minors)-X-p-p-p(!!!) "I thought I might take 8 diamond tricks" (no, really, he really said that) -6 for 1400 and 100%! This reminds me of a hand not quite so extreme where I had 1=1=7=4 I had about 10 hcp including AQ in diamonds. Partner opened 2NT - weak 5/5 in the majors. I was tempted to bid 3♣ which was an artificial GF the first step of which would have shown diamond shortage - quite a likely hand for partner I thought - which i would the pass. Luckily I didn't try this as partner was 5=5=2=1 so would have made some other bid. I passed and 2NT became the final contract - well i might take seven diamond tricks. Partner's diamonds were Kx!!!! A diamond was led <_< -1.
Gerben42
I'm a 6♦ man. Wouldn't have doubled 6♥ as North.
jdonn
I think opening 6 of a suit is never right as a preempt because they double you in 5 too often. Here it would either go 5♦ 5♥ all pass or 5♦ X all pass in all likelihood.

skjaeran
Looks like a 5♦ opening to me.6♦ will lead to playing 6♦x 90+% of the time. I don't rate the outcome to be good enough in the long run. Prefer 5♦ which I'd expect to buy 50-60% of the time - which is more reasonable IMO. pclayton
I understand the concerns about 6D but I don't agree with the outcome. When we hold two voids, the chances the opponents are distributional as well is also very high. I think you are deluding yourself if the opponents are automatically going to let you play at the 5 level when they are red / white. Its very likely they will bid 5 over 5 here. How happy are you? I'm wouldn't be and I would be sorely tempted to compete to 6♦. 6♦ x'd is probably a good sac against a game. Expecting to buy it for 5D x'd isn't realistic.
